  • Can I use ECC DDR in an Asrock K7S8X?

    See title

(I can get ECC DDR RAM for cheap on eBay, cheaper than non ECC, thus my question)

I'm not 100% sure anymore, but if I remember correctly, ECC RAM can be used in normal DIMM slots no problem. Registered RAM can't be used if not supported.

Now, since the board is for the XP, then I assume that it is not geared for Registered, so definately avoid that. But ECC "should" be fine. (Emphasis on "should").

    :: edit ::

Although Crucial says no ECC support, so I'm not sure 100%

afaik it's the other way round. Registered RAM will work in any mobo that also support plain 'unbuffered' but is required for large chipcount DIMMs in some motherboards, where ECC modules may not work properly unless the chipset supports it

A definitive answer would be great

        It's a 1GB ECC Registered, BTW.

I wouldn't buy it then. Being both Registered and ECC puts you in a no win situation. As if I am right, the registered part will make it not work. If dZeus is right, my ECC will bugger it up. Buy somewhere else that you know for sure will work.

1 GB for 50 eur would have been so nice

Yes it would. But you wouldn't be able to use it.

I'm sure ECC is fine in non-ECC boards - it's just an extra bit per byte that the motherboard wouldn't be able to use.

Yes, I've got a stick of 256MB ECC SDRAM that's running fine in a non ECC motherboard.
                  Main: Dual Xeon LV2.4Ghz@3.1Ghz | 3X21" | NVidia 6800 | 2Gb DDR | SCSI
                  Second: Dual PIII 1GHz | 21" Monitor | G200MMS + Quadro 2 Pro | 512MB ECC SDRAM | SCSI
                  Third: Apple G4 450Mhz | 21" Monitor | Radeon 8500 | 1,5Gb SDRAM | SCSI

erm..i've got some Reg EEC working fine in a Reg EEC mobo... Oh wait... that doesn't help at all....

It really depends on the mobo.

I know abit kr7a can use both registered and unregistered, but to go to the full 4G you have to use registered ram.

If you are using a single stick I think there is a very good chance of it working, but you cannot mix registered/non registered.

Supposedly it works, I asked this on Ars and the answer was positive as long as you don't mix it with nonregistered on AMD side.

Just don't use buffered/registered sticks on 875/865 chipset, they only support unbuffered/nonregistered ECC or unbuffered/nonregistered nonECC.
