Sound and Digital out?

OK, apparently Doom3 does *not* support DD 5.1. The only way you'll get DD 5.1 is with the nVidia Soundstorm. If you want 5.1 it's gonna have to be analog Check out this <A HREF="http://www.forumplanet.com/planetdoom/topic.asp?fid=5733&tid=1438726">thread</A>.

Thanks for the link LS. I was starting to lean towards trying the analog inputs because I believe my reciever can accept 6 analog inputs which would bew really nice. I'll have to check it out

OK, I just looked up my manual for my receiver and it says:

6-Channel Direct Inputs for Use with External Surround Decoders

Ahhhh ... thanks for the clarification LS. I've only heard it described as 5.1 but I assumed it would be using the digital link. I gave up dicking with the audio so I could play some of the game. I'll try the 5.1 analog inputs on my Pre-Pro right now ...

It could be a while. I recall deciding not to hook up the 5.1 analog in the PC since I was using S/PDIF from my tuner card. I only left the 2-ch analog for PC sounds. I'll have to crack it open and see if hooking it up will be a problem. I don't know if I have enough mini-stereo cables either. I was actually hoping to get some work done outside. Oh well, its Doom season.

Got the 5.1 analog hooked into the Pre-Pro and its set right but no PC audio of any kind yet. I think I'll play for a bit (haven't fired up D3 today) before I mess with the audio any more.

So now that we're clear that digital won't work, exactly which sound cards can encode DD5.1? Nvidia soundstorm is that on some of the nforce 1, 2 and 3 motherboards? I need a new computer soon anyway...

Why didn't I buy a receiver without 5.1 analog input? But who wants to connect 6 analog cables to their receiver when you can get better sound with one, to bad the last option doesn't work.

No, I don't think this was nVidia. Creative did threaten to sue id at the last minute, with a bullshit patent, and that's why EAX is in there at all.

Yeah. So basically, if you want to use the digital out for 5.1, it'll only work with the nVidia Soundstorm. Otherwise you're stuck with analog 5.1. Analog is fine if you have a decent sound card but it's still a pain to hook up with five more cables plus adapters.
