Speaking of using 3dmark to see if your system matches up with others of like build......

Right now I have a 3.06ghz P4 (533mhz FSB) with 512mb of RAM (running at 355mhz (which is technically UNDERclocked, it's DDR400) with a 6800GT. Now, even if I overclock it to 3.38ghz and the ram at 398mhz, and the GT to Ultra speeds... I only get 16k in 3dmark01. 3dmark03, I scored around 11k. And in Aquamark, I scored about 58k. (oh, and as a side note, with 3dmark01, I had to turn off HyperThreading, otherwise I scored around 14k.)

From what I've seen elsewhere on the net, I should be getting about 19-21k. Very odd.

      See sig for specs.

      I score 12K in 03 and 20something in 01. Just for reference.

I score quite close to 12k in 03, I think it was 11699, and your system is quite a bit faster than mine. That's why I find it really odd that in 01 my score is so much lower than everyone elses. In the long run, I guess it doesn't really matter, but it'd be kind of nice to actually have everything comparable to people with the same hardware.

          Novid,

At some point in the future then yeah the detail will have to be added but not for the next few years, it is going to be a little while before cards can chuck around the 6 million poly source models that UE3 is going to use.

Until that point (a couple of years away) this whole 3D mark, add more poly is a joke. If they want to test properly then this version should focus on normal maps.

But they do use normal maps in these shots. I don't see why the kind of graphics we see in these shots won't become a reality in a couple of years. And wasn't 3dmark about trying to simulate future game performance??? The UE3 demo was run afterall on a current generation gpu.

Just look at some games today and the games from 2 years ago, an enormous difference.

And last, I thought Beyond3D had a huge say in the development in 3DMark. I would think they would have voiced their opinions many times about non real world tests. I guess we will have to wait and see.

But the only problem with that is that the Major GFX makers will use it as a marketing tool, when it doesn't even truely repesent what they will be playing on it game wise.
Why is it called tourist season, if we can't shoot at them?

But that's is exactly what I am NOT saying. I am saying that if my 3dmark score is way off from your 3dmark score, then something is wrong with my system.

As a matter of fact, whenever I build a new system, I run the latest 3dmark. If I get score that is in line with everyone elses, then I know I am good to go except for the minor tweak here and there.

Same thing that I do. Which is why it worries me that for some reason 3dmark01 is so much lower on mine. Yet 3dmark03 and even Aquamark3 all seem to be pretty close to what others with my hardware are getting. So something isn't sitting quite right.... Oh well, guess I should do a fresh install eventually... But it's too much of a pain!

Me too. Not only that but using it as a soak test to make sure it'll do overnight on 3DMarkxx makes me feel happier that the system isn't coming back in a few days!
