PDA/Smart Phones - which one?

Just to resurrect this thread: I have bought the Nokia 6260.

Featurewise it is extremely impressive (then again, my previous one is 4 years old, so I might be easily impressed).
Sizewise it doesn't bother me: it is slightly smaller (but heavier) than my previous phone, so there is no added bulkiness for me.

An important feature (more than I thought) is SyncML: I use it to synch with Outlook. And it synch everything: contacts, calendar, notes, ...
Being able to do this via bluetooth is also cool!

However, I must spend quite some time fine-tuning the settings (vpn, access points, even my contacts). But from what I've seen so far there is little doubt I'll like the phone.

I finally decided that I want to own the Treo 650. There is only one problem...you can only get it through Sprint or hack it to work with Verizon. So, whomever comes out with it first, Verizon or Cingular, that is who I'll be switching to. Now I just have to wait :/

I considered buying the S/E P910a, but it is just to damn expensive. The cheapest I can find it is $700 on ebay. I also considered the S/E S710a, but they still ahaven't released it.

I can't believe I started this thread on Oct. 5th. I've been looking for a phone much too long.

I heard late January for Cingular. But we will see...

Sucks too becasue I can get it for $369 shipped to my door if I sign up with Sprint. That is definitely worth it. I hope that kind of deal happens with the other carriers.

The Treo 650 should be in stock at Sprint stores now. Stock may be low, but they should be attainable. I know several people with them already (beyond just testers (guess where I work)). They are very nice I want one too

Couldn't you buy overseas? Here, most devices are unlocked (then again, they will be more expensive ).

I also found the SE910 too expensive. For my use, it is mainly a phone, and I limit myself to a certain price point.

Euhm, isn't Palm supplying a memory card, due to some memoryproblems in the 650? I recall an article stating that due to a different memory-block size, applications take up more memoryspace on the 650 than they did on the 600. Consequently, in real life, the 650 appears to have even less memory. Palm is now supplying a 128 MB memory card while working out a solution.

You can only get them in US and only through Sprint at the moment. PalmOne obviously signed a deal with them so they got the first ones. The other problem is Sprint use CDMA whereas practically everyone else use GSM

There is an issue with the new memory system on the 650's which is why PalmOne are currently supplying a free 128Mb SD card temporarily. Hopefully a software fix will be available before the GSM models start shipping. Even better would be if the GSM models came with more memory

Seriously though, it you're going to get a web-enabled phone you want to go with a CDMA carrier, like Sprint or Verizon. GSM is good for voice calls, and for people who travel internationally, but if you don't plan on using your phone in far off lands it really doesn't matter if you go with CDMA.

And yes, Sprint and palmOne have a very good relationship. Sprint has been pimping Palm-based phones for years, and long before and much more than anyone else has, so Sprint gets first dibs on palmOne stuff. I saw my first Treo 650 2-3 months ago

Yeah, I am aware of this problem. The file system on the 650 is fixed at 512 where as the 600 can change dynamically. As long as they fix it soon I don't have a problem with it.

I've been looking into Sprint again. They actually seem to offer more of the features and plans I am looking for. I need to call today and see if they offer corporate discounts for Cisco employees.

My biggest concern I have is, I live in an area with lots of hills and mountains and Sprint seems to have the worst reception out of all of the carriers for the Bay Area. I had Sprint for 2 years and it was spotty at times but no huge complaints.
