I can't find my receipt (probably in a box in the attic waiting to be unpacked) but I have emailed the company (overclockers.co.uk) to see that if in the event that DFT reports an error, they can confirm my purchase.
Usualy just going to the seagate website and then to their rma section will allow you to enter the serial number and do an online warranty check, and get a RA # number.

The receipt is only useful for shops who will ship it for you, I don't think seagate does that...(quantum used to)

I had a drive that clunked once. I low level formated it and it came back to life, no wait, reborn is a better term.

I gave the case a little wiggle and couldn't reproduce the problem But I will of course check the connections.

Actually, on inspecting the drive, it is a WD 8MB SE not a Seagate - Oh well!

            It's a 120GB WD SE 8MB Cache

Do WD have their own error reporting tools?

Check your event log for drive errors.
Make sure you have SMART enabled in the bios, and check for errors on boot.

RMA it, I almost had the same problem with an 120GB WD SE 8MB harddisk. I received follwing errors in event viewer "The driver detected a contoller error on \Device\Harddisk0\DR0" and "A parity error was detected on \Device\Harddisk0\DR0"

I tested the disk on 2 different computers (different controller, ide-cable) and it always gave the same error in event viewer, also the WD diagnostic tools never found anything wrong with the disk.

check if you can get a new one cross shipped, as in they send you a new one, secured by a credit card, and if you don't send the old one back within X weeks, you pay for the new one, otherwise just send the old one back in the packaging they supply. I have done that a few times with Maxtor, not sure if WD offers that

The problem is that I might have to go through the supplier (and they are hard work). There customer service is poop, but the're prices are low... I always curse when I buy from them!

I'll try contacting WD directly... will i need proof of purchase, or will they be able to get the info from the drive id?

WD will let you do a cross ship. Just you have to make sure you ask for it. They only take you CC # in the event you do NOT send back your "bad" drive in 30 days. Plenty of time to move your data over and test out the new (READ: refurbished) drive that they sent you.

they do not require a receipt, at least I have never been asked for one.. they just require the drive to be under warrenty still.. you can probably do it all online.
If you are lucky, they will be out of stock on the 120GB drives, then they will ship you the next size up .. happened to me on more than one occation

I want the 120GBs though - I want to make a RAID 5 array.... although if they replace them with 250GBs

I've checked and they do offer advance shipping which is nice, as their RMA turnaround is 4-5 weeks!

I'll do it over the weekend then!

I might look into upgrading the disk to 250GB... anyone know about their higher capacity disks?

Well, if you get a larger disk, you can still use it at the smaller size.
