  • Laptops and power saving

I'm sure I read an article somewhere about Students who put their laptop into suspend mode and then packed it into the case which then caused the laptop to overheat as it wasn't properly shutdown.

Can anyone help me on this. I just had one very hot laptop delivered from one our departments and this had been in power save mode. I said they shouldn't do it and the boss basically said I'm stupid.

I wish I bookmarked the article as I've seen one or two hot laptops in the past as well.

If there is Win Xp/2000 on laptops, just eneble hibernation and ajust for laptop to go in hibernation when the lid closes.

What laptops are you haveing problem with?

Yeah, suspend is not hibernation. In suspend mode the processor is still active (albiet in a lower power state) and the motherboard is still powered up. Leave it in suspend for a day and the battery will drain down too.
I'm not sure about where an article is about that, but if you just explain about what suspend actually does versus hibernation then its pretty clear. Hibernation actually turns off the computer.

Yeh I thought the problem was with suspend. Now I need an article that explains that and why laptops shouldn't be shoved off into cases in suspend mode.

Slightly on topic... I have an IBM T23 here, which seems to have battery issues.
It starts out at 100% full, but after a couple of minutes, you get an errormessage stating that you should change battery or connect to a power outlet. The weird thing is though: all the IBM software says there is nothing wrong with the battery.
I think I'll order a new one, as this cannot be trusted...

Thanks Technoid but it doesn't say that you shouldn't use suspend option when the laptop is the carrying case. Most people think the unit is totally powered off in that case.
