  • name that game

    Hi Guys,

I've been struggling to find the name of an arcade game that I played many years ago. I recently realised that there's probably an emulator for it or possibly a mame driver. I'd even consider buying a stand-up cabinet version of the game.

    I just can't remember what it's called.

It's a 3D sprite based (not polygonal) space shooter. I've played it at the arcade at Canada's wonderland and the CN Tower's tour of the universe attraction let you play a sit down version of the game.

Basically you'd fly around in your ship and dog fight waves of enemy ships. There was space based combat as well you could fly over a planets surface and dodge lava eruptions as well.

I remember there being really cool transition graphics between space and planet modes.

Anybody have any idea as to the name of the game?

I think I may remember that game. Might even have it for my old TI 99/4, if I could just find where the cartridges are. Did your fighter fly from the left and the enemy come in from the right?

Thanks for trying guys but so far that's not it. It was 3d sprite based. You flew forward, like into the screen. I think the angle was slightly overhead so your ship didn't obstruct the view too much.

        Keep the ideas coming.

Was it one of the early Sega 3D sprite based games, sort of Outrun era?

Is it a sega game? Kinda like afterburner? (same style as least) I think I know which game your talking about but don't remember the name.

Taz's guess is as good as mine.

It was very similar in concept to After Burner. It could have been a Sega game but I'm not sure. The graphics were 3D sprite based like After Burner but I think it was a much newer game. The graphics were much smoother and IIRC higher rez. It would have been one of the later games to use that type of engine.

I seem to recall it having some digitized voice as well, which was a big deal at the time.

I haven't been to Canada's Wonderland in about 15 years so it's at least that old. Propably older, because I seem to recall the machine was kind of broken at the time.

                      It's not zaxxon.

But thanks guys, keep the guesses coming.

Was it overhead view or rear-like view?

This is a nice database of arcade games, you should look here if this isn't it.

                        Strike Fighter?

I remember that to be a pretty damn popular and fun games back in the day.

It was like Strike Fighter, but with a space theme. I'll check out the database.

Nope. Couldn't find it. It's a big database, but it doesn't have the be search capability.

I don't think it was that popular a game, at least not around Toronto. Or maybe it was popular, but not well distributed.

                            Please keep guessing.

(it blew me and my friend of my seat: we started the game, and all of a sudden the PC (an XT) went 'Get ready for mach 3' through the PC speaker )
