How about Paul Allen. He stepped in to become one of the principal financiers of the SETI project when NASA stopped funding. Was that not benevolent?
And funding SpaceShipOne, an initiative that will one day lead to you and me being able to visit space without having to pay millions of dollars... I guess Allen's interests are purely selfish on that one too?
I'm so sick of all the blind M$ bashing. Sure they had a lot of lucky breaks. But they worked really hard too. And have made more employee millionaires than any other company in history.
Sorry if this seemed to come on too strong. I'm not trying to attack you.
It's a little late and I'm not filtering as best as I should.
From my perspective, as someone who owns a consulting company that is a Microsoft Certified Partner, working with MS has lead to wonderful things for me.
In life and in business, you make strategic decisions about whom to ally yourself. Sometimes, you realise that you didn't make the right move. Microsoft has buried many competitors, it's true. But don't forget about all the companies that have made tons of cash by working with them.
To me, it all seems like so much sour grapes whenever I hear complaints from executives of companies that took on MS and lost.
They all claim that they failed not because their business plan was flawed or poorly executed, but because M$ is evil and unholy.
