  • How to remove thermal grease?

I want to safely remove old (quite dry and hard) thermal grease from my Athlon XP 1700+ Palomino and I have no idea how to do it best...suggestions?

        I've used this before:

It works really well. Not sure where you'd find it over there.

Clean with alcohol. Rub down with very fine sandpaper, only a fraction of a millimeter. That is the only way to get it truly clean. Though alcohol or a special cleaner will get it clean well enough.

If it's really hard, you can scrape it off with a plasti pen cap

Sandpaper is dangerous, even very fine sandpaper; it would require a very, very skilled hand, and I still say it is dangerous to your CPU. I agree with the alcohol (pure, unscented), paper towel, or plastic pen cap methods. Even water and a paper towel may work. (GENTLE pressure on rubbing, btw, not 250 ft-lbs!)

I'd just take it to the kitchen sink, get the water going lukewarm, and use elbow grease and dish soap. After it's squeaky clean you could rinse it off with distilled water if you were paranoid, and then just dry it with some lint free cloth (cotton underwear, preferably clean. ) It's never done my Celeron any harm at the very least.

I used 91% isopropyl alchohol and (don't get shocked now) Q-tips. There's also 70% isopropyl alchohol, but I didn't try that.

Thanks for suggestions, now at least I know precisely how to handle this.

Just one thing: after inspection of the bottom of the old heatsink I've came to conclusion that those are rather dry remains of thermoconductive "tape" that was "glued" to the bottom of the old radiator; but that doesn't change anything, right?

Still go for the alcohol. Acetone will work better, but it's bad for the chip if it's on there too long.

You could scrape the main part off with an xacto knife before getting out the chemicals. Acetone or nail polish remover should work fine. Won't hurt the chip for the length of time you are going to have it on there.

                            ditto.

that combination works well for me.
