I guess Sony is going to focus on their LCD with LED for the backlight? I would really like to see that come to the forefront. Sounds like a mix of 2 really good techs...well at least one really good tech
I agree..I got a RCA (nee Phillips) 51in widescreen DLP HDTV and it kicks ass. But the interesting thing is there is a similar sized RCA model that is sold in Target (about $200 cheaper) that doesnt have nearly as good picture as mine does.
Why is it called tourist season, if we can't shoot at them?
dZeus, flourescents have a MUCH lower energy usage than LEDs will have for a long time. Granted, they don't last as long, but long enough for most applications.
Also, LEDs aren't really suitable for ambient lighting for instance, due to them being monochromatic, very unlike the sun (though flourescents face the same problem to a lesser extent - incandescent is still the most pleasing light, though of course even less efficient than LEDs).

Costco in my area has some LED backlit LCD displays attached to Sony Vaio computers. They do look much better than tradition LCDs, but I'm still skeptical about use on a large, widescreen TV.

LEDs do not need to be monochromatic, they can pull off the same trick that flourescents use. There IS a white LED, which is actually an LED in the UV band, coated with phosphors.

from what I remember they will be using red, green and blue LEDs to allow adjustments to the color of the backlight. no problem with being monochromatic then...

"Lobsters?"
"Really? I didn't know they did that."
"Oh yes, red means help!"
The Sony 34" Widescreen XBR HDTV CRT has the best picture, period. Sony rear projection LCDs are crap.. cannot even compare to the Mitsubishi DLP Rear Projectors.
