rd /s

Removes the entire directory tree, whether it has files in it or not, protected or not, etc. The best, and fastest way, to kill a directory in NT based OSes.

It's down to about 60 minutes remaining to delete the badmail directory. I can't even imagine how many files that is.

What I like about doing this with explorer is that it gives me some status info. I don't think I'd get the same doing this from a command prompt.

isn't there a smartdrive/cache program in dos? IIRC that will speed things up considerably.

Yeah but it's already loaded in windows.

I know what you're talking about though. Even relatively small directories would take a long time to delete in DOS if you didn't have smartdrv loaded.
