Nicram: Most of the sites either can't connect to the cam server or require an ActiveX control. The only ones I got working (didn't try all) were from the Deutsches Historisches Museum, and their image quality was horrible, which is more or less expected at night.

Well i don't know about software, because when it is connected by LAN it's not using any drivers or software. So You don't have to install anything on Your main computer. OFcourse You may always try the Explorer & other software from axis. Some of them are catch sequences, moveis etc. I think it's good
Did You use it az ?

Sorry, my wording was confusing, I meant their webcam image serving software, from an internet user's point of view. Forcing ActiveX on IE, not recognizing Opera, other problems with Opera...

Must be those dodgy low market share browsers.

Worked fine here on firefox as well.

Works partly in Opera if Opera isn't IDed as MSIE (which is NOT the same as spoofing - the useragent string still contains "Opera"). As I said, poorly written software.

No no az listen. There is no software. There is simple html webpage, that got <img..... & there is picture form camera, it can't work bad this option.
In the camera there is just web server that send html+picture. If You want, You may use java scripts or activex but, You may choose will You want use that or not. There are many many option. I even think it's good idea to make some article about this in future

                      Looks like an Opera problem.

There must be some sort of bundled server or HTML stuff, several sites had the same interface.

TP, while one of the problems might beOpera related, not detecting Opera is a flaw in browser detection mechanisms as it is actually very easy to do, and forcing unnecessary ActiveX on IE users also is very bad IMO.

Well it's back to the problem should you redo your web page for a browser thats got approx 1 - 2 % of the market share.

Agreed it's going to be doing something at the camera end.

Interesting it's just IE option which doesn't work.
Sure it's not a bug with Opera?

Yes. The site tries to send Opera the site for IE, which contins ActiveX, which no browser other than IE supports (and with good reason!). The bug is that the site doesn't detect Opera, although its useragent string is Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; OS) Opera X.Y [la].
