They're even better than that (though $50 for 1 year is a pretty good deal). They recently started increasing storage and transfer amounts weekly. I get an extra 20 MB storage and 1GB transfer (I think) every week. I had originally signed up for 7680M storage / 192G transfer, and now I'm up to 9000 M storage / 254G transfer per month. Pretty soon, it'll be the equivalent of continuous transfer on a T1 line.

One of these days, I should actually put some content on the websites I have there

Another vote for Dreamhost. I've had very good luck with them. As for 1&1 my recommendation is to avoid them. Gurm and I've talked about how they put up a front of supporting big companies but they have to many problems for this to be likely true. The email hosting inconsistencies I got with the alone would be reason to avoid them.

OK, you need to do the dirty work. Go to your control panel and click on rewards. Scroll down until you see "retroactively refer someone!". Fill in the form, get the credit.
