Logitech X-530 5.1 speakers for about two months now. Previous to that I had an Altec Lansing AVS300 2.1 system.
      Sound card, Audigy 2.

Stereo speakers via onboard sound on my A7N8X-e with Cambridge Soundworks DTT3500 Digital 5.1.

Slightly OT: I am looking for good headphones - preferably cordless with a docking station that also acts as a charger....

I'd dare say most users of multichannel cards do what owners of 5.1 audio systems do: they only use 2 stereo channels, or at most 2 stereo channels and the subwoofer.

Most people either don't care or the wife won't let her decor be spoiled by speakers mounted all over the room.

                    Klipsch Ultra 5.1's

I use Stereo for music, headphones for many things, and surround for gaming (sometimes headphones).

I have the stereo speakers, just nowhere to put them. I use my Sennheiser HD-595 headphones the most though.

Small, tinny stereo speakers for casual music and for playing games, headphones for serious listening.

I very often put on headphones and turn them way up in the evening, close my eyes to relax and concentrate on the music, only to find myself suddenly waking up to a particularly loud sound after an indefinable legth of time. Maybe I really should go to bed earlier

2.1 here - Harmon Kardon Champagne satellite + subwoofer system.

There's no point in having more channels on the computer, since I have a home theater system for surround stuff.

I agree. I also don't see the need for surround on the PC. The living room already has a surround setup for movies etc. And my room setup doesnt allow for surrounds.

I recently got some Altec Lansing MX5021s to replace my dead/dying Cambridge Microworks speakers. They're pretty decent IMO. Other times (gaming and late-night listening among other things), I use my Etymotic ER6s or sometimes my Sennheiser HD580s.

Just the speakers built in my second monitor for PC work; a 4-channel connection (mixing panel, 2 amplifiers, ... to overcome the fact that I don't have a single home cinema amp) for watching movies.
