IE supports the title tag and the title tag overrides the alt tag.

Problem with the alt/title thing is a lack of understanding with the web developers.

Actually, you've got an alternate browser any time you have to bring up more than one browser to surf content. The majority of sites are still primarily coded for IE and so that's the browser that will offer me the most compatibility. You can fight "standards" or you can go with the flow and move on; and by "standards", I don't mean a spec but actual implemented code that is used by the majority of systems. Standards most always have room for interpretation and the implementation becomes the real standard (and yes az ... I have long experience with this so I know what I'm talking about).

Sigh ... seems there are always computer zealots out there. These days you've got your browser bigots and of course we still have the Church of Apple.

Seems to me you're not entirely unbiased myself (and, while this has not really much to do with this thread, your posts in the last week or so have seemed more bitter than usual, or is this my imagination?)

There is no reason for any site that isn't doing anything really fancy like webApps etc., to not work in Gecko browsers or Opera, or Safari. Sure, there may be slight differences in rendering, but that should be about it.

unless its using .Net or activeX, they do work in Gecko browsers, but then again Gecko browsers have a functioning Dom.

Out of the 6~800 unique people visitors per day to murc, 35~40 are opera users.
all using different versions of Opera with different levels of ability.

Remember web aps are my day job, and being honest, opera doesn't even register as a blip on my radar for coding for.

I'm biased towards compatibility, etc.. I had to rid myself of OS/2 Warp in favor of Win98 years ago because I couldn't fight the lack of apps (even though I much preferred the logic of OS/2). Don't mistake me for a Micro$oft fan because I'm quite the opposite (I may even take up the sword soon, but that would mean having to work).

Yep, you're right (though I wouldn't describe it as bitter but perhaps less constrained ); it may be the Gurm factor, or my getting "old", but it's most likely due to several personal reasons.

Technically ... IE is about 2 generations behind on W3C standards. The problem is that since IE owns 90%+ of the market they are considered the standard by coders. IE 7 should catch them up though.

                    That's how standards work/evolve.

It's not a standard if no one else can use it. That's call proprietary intellectual property

There are all sorts of standards and some are barely used at all or are only used by a few organizations.

Microsoft has made an effort in recent years (seven years as I recall) to incorporate their needs within the IETF standards by joining the bodies and having those features passed by the committees. Its no longer IP when it's incorporated into international standards.

This is not true. IETF lets lots of patented technology in as standard.

Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.

So you're debating the IP comment and not MSFTs involvement in the IETF, right? I'll have to look into your reference later (thanks). I haven't bothered looking into such things in recent years.

That's perfectly fine for webApps (though what exactly is DOM? Isn't this just uing certain technologies (js?) in a certain way?), it's not for mostly static pages.
