UMD is optical (I though MD's were magnetic?) and can hold ~ 1.8GB (according to sony). it should have a clip or something to cover the disks, but other than that it seems pretty solid and unbreakable.

Who's up for a Sony PSP?

MD's are optical...at least when it comes to reading from them...
Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to say that MD=UMD...I'm simply saying that UMD probably closely (call it descendant if you want) relates to MD, with upped capacity from 1 to 1,8 GB (that's fine) and put in inferior casing (that's not...)
Main point is: just think how cool would it be if UMD's were obvious, official next step for MD, with the same casing, and if drive in PSP would allow recording of MD's or at least playing them back, recorded in some other device.
But Sony would never do that...it would lost control over PSP.

A lot of people are having that same reaction.Originally posted by jmsI think I just soiled myself....

I rarely take the time to play games but I'll get one of these for road trips. I'm also interested in the video aspects of this device and am curious if these de-interlacing artifacts are the fault of the player or the encodings.
Thanks for the great initial review DGhost.
I'm sure you'll keep us posted as you gain more experience with this baby.

Huh? How does that all work?Originally posted by xortam(and this year Chanukah actually starts on Christmas day for the first time in quite awhile.)
Oh man...Wipeout for the PSP...I LOVE Wipeout. Hmm..
I was thinking of picking up a 2nd gen PSP, whenever they come out and the price goes down.

Oh ... you mean after a competitor comes out with something even better than the PSP.Originally posted by Kooldino...I was thinking of picking up a 2nd gen PSP, whenever they come out and the price goes down.

Nah, I just mean after their first hardware revision. You know how Nintendo always has multiple hardware versions of any given handheld portable? Well, I'm betting Sony does the same.Originally posted by xortamBasically, due to the difference in using a lunar versus solar calendar.

The PS2 has multiple revisions. Mine was the second revision. Still plays games well. I love the PSP... but i think it would be better if it has a crampshell design of some sort. personally I think the PSP could have a better design. I bet Sony can do an even better job if they plan to build a second PSP.

I saw something over on Hardocp that the demand for them wasn't all that great, some place in TX had a midnight madness sale and only 5 units sold
I'd say the price is kinda steep, but I still want oneWhy is it called tourist season, if we can't shoot at them?

Probably £450Originally posted by dbdghmm $250, I wonder what the British will have to pay.
Edit: You noticed it listed on Amazon for £179.99, which I suppose isn't too bad. When you own your own business you only have to work half a day. You can do anything you want with the other twelve hours.

interesting notes:
turning the device off places the unit in a suspend mode. I'm not sure about power consumption and how shelf-stable it is when in this mode, but it is kinda nice to be able to turn it back on and be exactly where you left off.
the Power LED is blocked by my palm. i'm not sure if this is good or bad yet (kinda nice not seeing it all the time), but I am assuming it will start blinking or something when the batteries get low. might not be so good.
battery life is pretty good. need to do some kind of stress test, but it seems pretty good for all that it does.
generally, load times suck. UMD's seek time seems to be pretty bad, dunno about sustained read speeds either. once developers start writing optimizing for it, it will help. i'm reminded of the PS1 and PS2 on release. even the XBox has it's titles that make you want to kill someone."And yet, after spending 20+ years trying to evolve the user interface into something better, what's the most powerful improvement Apple was able to make? They finally put a god damned shell back in." -jwz

Well I picked one up for myself also. I used to work at Target Part time, so since it was my last day I decided to open up a Target Charge Card to get an additional 10% off with my employee Discount of 10%. I got myself a PSP with Metal Gear Acid and an Ipod Shuffle with some other stuff for about $365 bucks. I figured it was the only chance to get 20% off on these items, so I went with it. I haven't had much chance to play with either once since I didnt get home till after 11:20 or so from work. The PSP is pretty cool, though I couldnt get it work with my wireless network since it doesnt support WPA from what I can see. I have to check out blockbuster to see if they have any rentals for the PSP since I have a shitload of Gift Cards from there and need to put them to use
Why is it called tourist season, if we can't shoot at them?

Well that was quite a short road.
Speaking of roads ... I'll probably wait until my next road trip before I go out and pick one up. I doubt I would get around to playing with it much until I sit in a car for hours (as a passenger of course
).

Yeah I know, but then again who could pass up 20% off a PSP and a Ipod Shuffle?
I'd be stupid not to get it and I was quitting that job and Monday was my last day.
