  • Compatibility issue with AGP slot! Please solve this problem...

Hi, I'm a long time visitor and a first time poster! And I have a question that desperately needs some answers to.

My 3year old desktop has 4x/2x-AGP 2.0 compliant AGP slot and I was thinking of upgrading to something like GeForce 6600GT. But it says all the geforce 6 series cards are only compatible with 8x/4x AGP. Does that mean I can use it on my system, since I have 4x AGP slot? But then again, my mainboard also supports 2x AGP and I heard these graphics cards are not physically fit with 2x AGP slots.

So, will the card fit in my mainboard?

I REALLY appreciate your input! Thank you!

Your board has universal slot (without notches) so all cards should fit. 6600 has a notch so that it fits in universal and 4x/8x slots but not in 2x slots (which also have a notch, but on the other side).

Quetsion is if your CPU is strong enough to complement the 6600 (anything slower than 2500+/2.6GHz and you're going to be primarily CPU bound) and also check for your motherboard (search google and various hardware forums) if it has any issues with 6600 cards. For instance my motherboard has AMD 760 MPX chipset and all MPX chipset boards (Tyan TigerMPX, Asus A7M266D, MSI K7D Master, ...) have problems with 6600 series, since they are native PCI Express with AGP bridge chip.

      Thanks for quick reply.

I don't think I have universal AGP slot like you said. I have a notch and I think it supports 1.5V cards (it is AGP 2.0).
      Thanks.

        Doesn't an AGP x2 slot use 3.3 volts and a x4 1.5 volts?

Which chipset does your board have/what board do you have?

            Hi, UtwigMU.

My mainboard's chipset is Intel 850E, and use AGP slot version 2.0, which means it supports 4x/2x speed ( I think ). My board is Gigabyte 8IHXP version2.1. Here is a direct link to my mainboard's information at Gigabyte's website. http://www.giga-byte.com/MotherBoard...Rev%202.1).htm
            Thanks for all your help.

Usually (might be wrong) intel doesn't use AGP xx Universal specs.

My G400 non-4x part works fine on my Intel 875 boards, whatever that means

Looks to me like your motherboard should work with that card, since it supports 1.5v signaling which the card would need for 4x mode.

                    There is more to consider,
I recently purchased a 6600GT to put in my MSI746F mobo, which was one of the first 8x mobo's.
Plugged in fine, plugged the suplimental power into the vid card. POST got as far as the mem check, then it hung.
There was no supplimental power feed on the mobo (that nice little 4 pin plug) and wouldn't power the card no matter how hard it tried.
                    Juu nin to iro

As usual, my solution to your problem is simple:

                      Send the hardware to me.

Yes, that's right - all your problems can be solved by simply putting the hardware in a static bag, then into a padded container, and sending it directly to me. I'll take care of it.

I'm the least you could do, oh yeah

                      I would still get screwed

Not sure if this helps, but I ran both an ATI 9800XT and 6800GT on an Asus P4T-533C MB, which also uses an Intel 850E chipset.

I do not accept PSU's. Other hardware is welcome.
