Athlon64 upgrade....

I have had excellent results with SiS based AMD boards but I cant find one for Athlon64. I am
now looking at the ASrock 939Dual-m2 which will be released soon. It will have the ULI M1695 chipset(don't know how it will compare to SiS as far as the RT.X100 goes).

But won't the PCI bridge run off a PCIe lane in compatability mode on any PCIe enabled motherboard? If memory server me right, sparrow's nest nest is consider the ultimate in Chinese delicasy...oops, wrong line ... all PCI implementations on a PCIe motherboard do not have their own controller, but run in PCIe compatability mode. Or something like that.

IIRC when they tesed the 748 it was an early version. By the time I tested the SiS 748 it became apparent something had changed and it now works just fine, just like its predecessor the SiS 745.

Unfortunately nothing has changed in the VIA or NForces, and yes I've tried 'em.

Could that mean that my 746FX has the same problems as early 748? (the latter is just very slight modification of the former)
Anyway...what's the difference for me...

The RT.X10 doesn't have a lot of the RT.X100's realtime features, and so has reduced hardware requirements. It's like comparing a bare-bones Mustang to a Shelby Cobra.

Remember what I posted about the VIA's being even worse than the NForce? In this case the NForce had enough oomph to qualify but, as usual, the VIA's had an asthma attack in turn 2. As such the VIA chipsets are still excluded.

Just making a general point about VIA chipsets: if your application pushes a lot of bits and is going to hit > 1 or 2 PCI devices at once don't even go there

I doubt that Matrox has done much testing with the ATI chipsets because of their low market footprint so far.

I have stayed away from VIA for some time now.. (i ended with problems when having a TV-card, SBLive and 3com 10/100).. Been using ASUS motherboards previously they tend to be very stable and now i am using Giga-byte which comes fully featured and i have had no problems so far.

SiS traditionally had very good PCI implementation (made a 745 that is still buzzing along for a friend who set it up as a file server), currently i agree with the others that Nforce4 Ultra is the top chipset for AMD64, you cant go wrong with either ASUS or Giga-byte. My friend who got the A8N-E is very happy with it.
