  • harddisk config...

    Hello,

Ok, I had some issues with my harddisk (IBM UltraStar 36lzx), but the replacement disk is underway... However, I'm wondering which configuration would be the best performing one...

There are 2 harddisks that are always present: a Seagate Cheetah 10K.6 (U320, 36 GB) and an IBM UltraStar 36lzx (U160, 18 GB).

    What do you think?

I'd keep the same speed drives on same ribbon for full speeds out of each drive and forget RAID 0.

This was the current setup... I was just wondering if I could improve on it...

Improve on it? Nope. Keep the U160 on one channel and the U320 on another, then when the replacement U320 comes in... put that with the other U320.

Ooh, looks like we are having a conflict: same bus or different busses for the U320 and the U160 ?

Yes, separate buses. Not for the raw speed so much as the different options (packetization, etc).

But I think good questions are: Which drive for OS? Which drive for swap?

Gurm: currently, the U160 is sent back; the replacement disk (already underway!) will most likely also be a U160.

Wombat: Windows XP Pro, U320 for OS, U160 for swap.

I'm basically unsure about whether or not a U160 disk on a U320 will slow things down... Currently, the vote is at 50-50...

Ok fine. STILL put them on separate busses, but the replacement will go with the other U160 when it gets back.

In "theory", mixing devices on the bus "shouldn't" slow anything down. Note my use of "quotes". I use "quotes" because often it DOES mess things up and/or cause slowdowns. If you've got the extra cable, just put 'em on separate channels and be happier.

I know one cable is a U320 cable, but I'm not 100% sure the other one is rated for U160: the cables aren't twisted within the ribbon... It does have an active LVD/SE terminator, so this (LVD) seems to indicate U160...

IMHO as long as both drives are LVD, they will be fine on the same ribbon......mis-matched speed drives on slower buses default to lowest speed drive.

Lower speed, and lower-performing options. TCQ and whatnot.
