I thought that the two tier Xbox360 pricing was BS and theres nothing offical yet?
Why is it called tourist season, if we can't shoot at them?

I for one don't believe it.

How would having a hard drive or not having a hard drive affect the compatibility? Well, ok maybe it would but I fail to see them demanding $100 for backwards compatility, considering that said compatibility is going to be dodgy at best ANYWAY.

I could see the wireless controllers costing some extra $$, though. But again, isn't the wireless receiver (bluetooth or something, yeah?) going to be INSIDE the machine? So really that $100 might just be "accessories". I fail to think that core functionality will be impaired on it, otherwise as Tycho said it'll be the "XBOX three-shitty".

As I understand it, the backwards compatibility will be game specific. Some games will require a special driver for the emulation mechanism and some games might require re-compiled binaries. The hard drive will be preloaded with these drivers and binaries, plus I believe that this content will also be available on Live for people to download as more games are made compatible and if they get the hard drive later.

True, but if SOny deems that the PS3 is "way ahead" of the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Revolution they will tag on the extra price. Sony kept PS2 prices almost $50 above the Xbox for months because they deemed the PS2 superior and had the sales numbers to back it up.

We'll just have to wait and see.

BTW, the pricing details are official:

If you go to the bottom of the page you can see the difference in included accessories. PLus, the Xbox Live! Silver membership that comes with the Xbox 360 (the cheap version is called the "core system") is worth $50 MSRP as is, so all in all it's worth it if you can afford the extra $100.

Ah ok...well that kinda sucks. I was checking out the wireless controller...kind disapointed with the battery life...its only 25 hours. My logitech wireless for my Xbox with 2 AA battries has a life twice that.

As does my wavebird. Now admittedly, the XBox360 controller will DO a lot more... y'know, the whole "wireless voice chat" thing.

The headset sure as hell looks still wired to me.

The official MS description says that the headset is wireless.

Oh I guess the cord is to plug into the controller

I missed that, but wasn't part of the describiton under the headset anyways

Hmmm..might have to put a $50 deposit at the local EBworld for one

Actually, some people are pondering the thought that Sony announced an absurd initial price for the PS3 in order to goad MS into doing what they've done - priced a console at $400.

Alas you can get the stripper model (which no smart person would do, but then again a fool and his money are soon parted) for $299.

The thing I'm wondering about is how important is the HDD going to be if they go by the lowest common dominomator in developing games? The higher end package gives you the headset, wireless controller and remote which is roughly a $75 value in additon to the HDD. Thats why i'm going for the more expesive model since I'd wind up paying the same amount just getting the HDD (if its really needed) in addition to the Core system plus a wireless controller. I dunno call me old fasioned but I beta tested Xbox Live and even though I have broadband, i never really gamed on line much. I gamed online more with the Orginal UT playing against MURCers or Close Combat series back about 4-5 years ago (with a 56k modem) then I do now. Doesnt have much appeal to me I guess... and I can't stand the 12-15 year old kids that infest online gaming.

And "supposedly" no backwards compatibility. I wonder if that's just because it lacks the HDD?

Well that's the point, isn't it? MS spent years trying to convince everyone that you NEEDED a hard drive in a console, now they're saying that you really don't, and trying to force developers to NOT use one. Hrm.

XBox Live is a pale imitation of online PC gaming. It sucks. But people are convinced that it's great.

Well no hard facts about the backward compatibitly yet. I dont think its much an issue yet...hell I remember when I couldnt play Atari 2600 games on my 5200 Its not like I dont have my old Xbox around if I want to fire up an older game on it. For the most part I play it once and I'm done with it, even PC games.

Well I was talking about PC gaming. Then again most of the type games I like dont lend themselves well to online gaming. Personally I think Gaming at this point in time SUCKS! I'm really disapointed with whats out there and whats coming out. I remember the days of the Commodore 64 and I think the PC gaming arena was much healther 10-15 years ago then it is now. IMO
