  • Touchpad on top of mouse...your opinions?

I mentioned about this idea of mine here before... And although I rarely came back to it, just think about it...what if the entire surface occupied today by two buttons on top was also a touchpad? (or even most of/whole top surface or perhaps at least the parts that come in contact with fingers)
I don't claim this to be the next big thing, but...worth a research perhaps. Mainly because while I am delighted with the idea of scrollwheel (from MightyMouse), one could be a tad concerned about its small size - is good compromise between accuracy and lack of need to constantly reallocate your finger possible? But of course I didn't try Mighty Mouse, perhaps the small size of the ball is the thing that nullifies the problem I have with current wheels...that you either can be precize but move your finger a lot...or move a little but every "click" moves half a screen. Imagine continuos scrolling using two fingers at once! Or no need to apply force whatsoever (perhaps little nicer)
Nonetheless, the mouse with touchpad could be interesting. For Apple, it would allow them again to have mouse with no visible "impurities" of design . I guess it would be easier for others thought, since probably the implementation with actual physical buttons wouldn't had to be so thoroughly thought out to work good. Experiminents with various implementation of the idea would have to take place for sure...
So...what do yo think about it? Also, what nonconventional uses can you imagine? (I had a quick idea of most basic biometrics a while ago...haven't thought about it since then)

PS. Someone said to me it must be already patented for sure...but even if not, no difference for me (a poor student which came into game of poker recently with 4¢ to come out with over 2€, so he had money for food the next two days...). But...wouldn't posting this idea here discredit any future patent appliences? If yes, than at least for that the post is worthwile...so (in the latter case): if you're finding it worthy of further research and you're from some academics or the design team of Apple/Logitech/MS/whatever - go ahead; since I don't have the means to pursue the subject further, feel free to do it yourself (and come to conclusion that the idea sucks donkey balls )

Well, Kensington came up with the WebRacer a couple of years ago... It basically was a touchpad with a number of buttons surrounding it. A few years on, and all traces of this devices seem to be gone...

Seeing as manufacturers now have mice with scrollwheels that tilt left/right for horizontal scrolling, I can imagine similar things would be possible with a touchpad.
slightly OT comment: I hate touchpads....

However, I'm a fond trackball user, it is a moot point for me...

Yeah...but this would be touchpad only by tech, not by way of using...
Besides, more would be possible: try to scroll at ~210 degrees for example with tilting wheel.

And since, again, this wouldn't be used the same way as typical touchpads...perhaps you'd like it

But seriously...soem research is needed...too bad constructing some prototype is out of my range... (uhmm...probably)

Not very comfortable/practical/fast in many situations (nedd I list them really?)

You can scroll with a wheel faster than pan with middle button?

Look, for some reason, even though I'm aware for something like 5 years of this possibility, I never use it. Never. And I'm not alone.
I don't know it just...doesn't feal right; not very intuitive...perhaps a bit artificial solution...
But the thread is not about personal preferences, opinions please!

Fellow up: not surprisingly, someone else had thsi idea, apparently quite recently to make it more interesting :>

Quite simmilar, only I was also thinking about making the touchpad bigger. But at least...eprhaps this wasn't such a bad idea after all, if Logitech just putted it on its top notebook mice
Now...I'm waiting for corded model wiht more normall shape, it would be fun to use mouse that's implementing "your own" idea
