  • HDR Displays - The future?

Just finished reading this article about a new display technology. Apparently the company that patented it is securing licenses with all the major manufacture. Really though, go read th article and check out the pics and videos. My jaw dropped to the floor, very impressive.

BTW, there is actually an HDR display on the right. The contrast ratio is infinite in theory.

I think that also those displays will be the future, albeit in different field entirelly (mhmm...think about 100$ MIT laptop (they say that they would license the thing to PC manufacturers, which could sold it for more, something like 200/300$ perhaps...but this still would be great) with such display...)

Very cool. They're going to have a lot of competition from other technologies in the pipe, like carbon nano-tube displays and Sony's new SXRD, which is supposed to be pretty awesome.

It'll be nice to finally see some really good new display technologies coming out in the next 5 years though.

How is this different to the Sony Qualia 005 with LEd back lighting and the NEC Spetraview Reference 21 with LED backlights?

In those 'normal' monitors with LED backlights, the whole array is on at the same time and driven evenly. The brightside technology allows for selectively turning on and off and diming sections of the backlight array, so if its supposed to be black in an area, the corresponding bulbs are turned off and you get black (minus light leakage and whatever reflectivity is caused by ambient light in the room).
