Yes, it's going to cost me an arm and leg..

Apparently you can just plug the 20 pin connector from the PS into the 24 pin connector on the motherboard, leaving four pins empty, and it'll work. This is in theory of course, and your PS still has to have the power to run all the components. PCI-E vid cards take a lot of power.

I have the same motherboard, and when I tried to power it with my old 300W PS, it wouldn't even turn on. The optical drives came on, and the fans started spinning, but the monitor never came out of power saving mode. No evidence a POST taking place either. I ended up buying an Antec Sonata II case, which came with a spanky new PS with the 24 pin connector, and all was well.

Also note that the 4 pin ATX-12V connector is very different from the four new pins on the main ATX power connector. Even though the ATX-12V connector fits into the four new sockets on the main ATX connector (!!), don't think of trying it. It'll probably roast the board.

Ok thanks! When the parts arrives I will try it. If it doesn't work good I'll get a new PSU.

Depends on the board and components. My DFI manual explicitly said not to even try a 20 pin.
Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.

I just wanted to let you know that I installed my new computer parts yesterday. I've tried my enermax 355W with the x2, 7800gt, 3 harddrives, 1 dvd and 1 cd-rw. I used a 20->24 pin adapter. It works perfectly. Run some games a bit and 3dmark2001. System seems really stable.

The cpu runs really cool, much cooler than my old xp1700.

The coolest part is that I can run games in maximum detail!!!

I also noticed that my A64 3200+ runs a whole lot cooler than my AXP 1700+. AMD rocks!
