  • Windows Explorer file select order?

You know what really grinds my gears?

    ...

    ...

That when you select 10 files in explorer, and drag them into another window, it ALWAYS does them out of order.

Go ahead, try it. Take ten files named:

    movie01.mpeg
    ...
    ...
    movie10.mpeg

Drag them all into Media Player. I guaran-friggin-tee you that you'll get:

    movie01
    movie10
    movie02
    ...

    Or:

    movie09
    movie10
    movie01
    ...

It happens every darn time. WHY? WHY BILL GATES WHY!?!?!?!?!?

I'm the least you could do, oh yeah
If only life were as easy as you
    I would still get screwed

I had that problem once. I fixed it. I don't remember how.

I know how frustrating it can be when you're pr0n loads in the wrong order. There's an appropriate progression of events. Seeing it out of order spoils the mood.
    P.S. You've been Spanked!

It's not just Media Player. It's any time you drag from one place to another. Drag a whole bunch of files from one drive to another and they'll end up out of order, too. It'll copy the last one first, then the first one. It's SOOOOO bizarre.

Ok I've looked on google, and have found a lot of people saying "yeah that's how Windows does it".

The "workaround" is to always SELECT the files backwards. Let's say you want to add 10 mp3's to your playlist. They are song01.mp3 through song10.mp3, and you want them in THAT order.

If you select them starting at the top (01), they'll ALWAYS be out of order. If, however, you select them starting at the bottom (10) they'll ALWAYS BE IN ORDER!

I'd LOVE to know what sort of re****tarded thing Windows is doing to make this happen.

Select the files from bottom to the top. Drag from the top most file in the file order (assuming you use List or Detail views). It will move in order.

Yes, I believe I just posted that.

Now why doesn't it work if you select from top to bottom?

whatever file you are "dragging" is the file that is going to be first in the new order. If you select first->last and you drag the selection from the last Icon, it will wind up being copied first, followed by the rest of the list.

                    interesting way of doing it.

Yep, that is the way. I don't think the order in which you select the items makes any difference. I'm not sure in what order the others come though: simply from the 'dragged' one down and then circular?

                      interesting way of doing it.
I can understand why they did it: it positions the 'dragged' item on top, so if you have a situation where you want to copy a number of files and then open one of them, it provides you with a way of having that one file first in the list.
