Never tested it but I can't imagine it wouldn't work, it's more a mutliplayer game then a single player game, what with all the DM tools.

A really fun open source game is Battle for Wesnoth. It's a turn based strategy game that has a some user mods as well.

I have to recommend Subspace . Originally released in 1995 and community-run since 199o or so, it's an incredibly addictive but really simple online game. It was a massively multiplayer game before the term 'massively multiplayer' was coined.
