      A really fun open source game is Battle for Wesnoth. It's a turn based strategy game that has a some user mods as well.

          I have to recommend Subspace . Originally released in 1995 and community-run since 199o or so, it's an incredibly addictive but really simple online game. It was a massively multiplayer game before the term 'massively multiplayer' was coined.

          Just a 2D space shooter, but I keep going back to it through all my addicitons to other games - grand theft auto, quakeworld, populous 3, quake 3, Rome: tw...

                Just played the newest need for speed, its pretty fun too, not sure what multiplayer is like on it.
