As your not making use of the SCSI backplane on the Proliant and it's a very old model then you would be better off replacing it.

And I agree you definitely want a hardware controller for RAID 5

What do you think of this?

Seems Ok apart from the VIA chipset

If you can get a dual socket A board and a couple of Duron's that would be better, assuming you definitely want to go the dual processor route.

yeah. I am in no rush to sort the server out. I've managed to source another ATA RAID card (its another 2400a unfortunatley). I will keep a lookout on ebay for a cheap dualie rig and swap the server for it. As long as the RAID array and my mail/webserver is working, the exact hardware doesn't bother me

Cheers lads, i'll let you know how i get on!

I managed to pick up an MSI K7D-Master from Dabs's B grade list at a reasonable price so check those places as well as eBay. The benefit of a dual socket A board is it will most likely have PCI-66/100/X slots, this should help with the RAID card performance as they tend to be 64bit and/or 66Mhz cards.

I've managed to get a replacement ATA RAID card from ebay. There wasn't much choice so i went for another Adaptec 2400A for £50. Fingers crossed!
