Nor mine. Intel squeezed the P4's into a smaller die and all they got for the effort was more heat troubles. At the same time AMD was putting the memory controller on the die etc. etc. etc. ending up with a real screamer.

the move to 65nm has shown lower heat figures and more overclockability, other than that basically no change from the 90nm, other than the obvious head room they will gain from the previously stated improvements. If you actually read up on the 45nm process you will find out that they have, to quote theinquirer.net from my best recollection, "Solved the leakage problem," meaning there will be obvious improvements for the desktop models and MAJOR improvements for the mobile. They even went on to basically say that if AMD does not come up with a similar breakthrough, they will get their a$ses handed to them in the mobile market; this was coming from the very pro-AMD inquirer.
But as I said, this won't be until - what - '08? So a lot can happen before that.

Man, now I don't know whether I should just bite the bullet and go 939 soon or what. I was aiming to have this machine built by March or so...and I can hold out a month or two beyond that for AM2...but 3Q? I don't think I oculd swing that.

@ kooldino, you can get 939 gear quite cheaply and when am2 arrives 939 stuff will get even cheaper, so you could buy now and expect to have cheap upgrade in the future.

AM2 stuff will be expensive initially, and there will be the usual teething issues for first bleeeding edge user.


@mehen you are right intel has been saying they have quite breakthrough comming, but they also point out there is a trade off with speed versus leakage...eg bodes well for multi core but not for higher Ghz

Thing is its quite a while in to the future, and AMD's current process is already very effiecent since they have done the ground work regards to leakage etc(soi, strained..etc), I think the will progess quite nicely with the die shrinks over the next couple of years....with intel snapping at there heels

Well kind of, any electrons not doing what you want them to do (ala swicthing a transistor)
Those extra electrons use up power and produce heat for no usefully reason, hence decreasing effiency.

There is probably a better/proper definition, but I think the above somes it up reasonably. I think there may a few people on this forum who could give us a more exact definition in this context, if they wish to chime in.

well you can think of the basic idea of superconductors, and then just reverse it.

more heat - higher resistance - more energy/power lost as heat -> more leakage and then on the same note concerning cpu's: more leakage, more power lost as heat, resistance gets higher etc - once one thing rises, all the others suffer. if you had no leakage you could do the same work using less power, or crank up the power and do LOTS of work.

Well, I have to upgrade my bro's aging Barton and build my mother a system. Considering that I'll probably go with the above mentioned (I also miss the HT on my old Northwood )

To be honest, the only thing I really need now is a second monitor
