  • ASUS 17" LCDs

Review of the top 17" model on AMD Zone, they gave it a 95%.

As a long time ASUS fan I'm glad they've entered the LCD market - also look for 19" models in the near future.
Big thing to note is the zero-bright pixel policy (1 year)

Seems that most of the motherboard manufacturers have jumped on the bandwagon, Gigabyte, Shuttle, Soyo.....

Certainly looks that way, shame really as they were one of the first

Personally, I wouldn't buy a 17" LCD. They use cheap TN glass, hence the crappy viewing angle and color inversion at off-angle viewing. Plus 17" is really a bit too small for SXGA resolution.

And yeah it is a shame that it seems Soyo is out of the motherboard buisness. All these guys are getting into making cheap monitors. I don't see how they'll make any money there.

Why do you say SXGA is too much for 17''? Unless one has impaired vision, I think it's a perfect resolution....1400x1050 on my laptop's 15.4" screen does seem a bit much, but SXGA@17'' is a natural match...I dont' understand why people used to keep their 15'' monitors at 800x600 (when they could have a perfectly decent 85Hz@1024) or 17'' monitors at 1024.
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

            I prefer 1280x1024 on a 19" screen over a 17". I think 17" is a tad too small for continual use.

When I used a 17" CRT (16" actual) i found 1152x864 to be the best resolution, now that I am up an inch (to an actual full 17 inches) 1280x1024 is fine for me - what I think is the main reason though, is that a LCD of equal size is much easier on the eyes than a CRT, so the higher res does not bother me. 1280x1024 is too blocky on a 19" LCD imo.

With a TFT the picture extends from one corner of the panel to the other so a 17" TFT has 17"'s of viewable area. CRT's are different, most 17" CRT gives you just under 16" of viewable area. The rule of thumb is a 17" TFT is roughly equivalent to a 19" CRT.

                  well, i just measured my 15 & 17" LCDs and my brother's 19" CRT

                  15 Daewoo LCD - 14 7/8 inches
                  17 Samsung LCD - 17 inches
19 Samsung CRT - 17 7/8 inches (actual viewing area, not just the diagnol of the glass)

We both run 1280x1024 and are both happy with it (1024 on my 15").
But like I said, 1280x1024 on a 19" LCD is borderline pushing it - but then 1600x1200 is borderline too high... *sigh

I'd like some REALLY high resolution over a relatively small area (well, I'd take a 21" LCD, but it'd be nice if it had 3200x2400 pixels ) and an OS that can cope with it - unlike current flavors of windows.

EDIT: On topic: Why do you want an Asus LCD? They're a motherboard maker, not a display maker. It's probably just some rebadged OEM model, anyway. I'd take an EIZO or NEC-Mitsubishi over this any day.
