  • what laptop projector for my bro

well my brother has asked me to recommend a projector for use with his laptop.
I did tell him that I've never used or even considered buying one before so any suggestions on a decent mid price range model(s) will be greatly appreciated.

if he just needs something cheap, any 1024x768 lcd job will do. if he needs something light for travel and business, look at the dlps with same res. you can get a sub 1 kg job for under $1k usd these days.

the Benq's are pretty good for the price
DLP's will have better contrast ratios than LCD's at a better price point , but suffer from 'rainbow' effects - try to find one with atleast a 3 times colour wheel.

just had another word with him and he wants to limit his budget to around $1k US.
apparently it's mainly intended for powerpoint presentations for his staff of around 10 people.

most newer DLPs don't suffer from rainbow effects, and very few people actually see them.

BenQ and InFocus general make good low cost business projectors. I'd look into those. You can get the under 2.5 kg models for around or under $1k USD.

http://www.projectorcentral.com/BenQ-PB2140.htm = MSRP of $999, can be found online for $899 USD, 800x600 native, scalable to 1280x1024. 2 kg, good for travel. One step up is the PB2240 which I've spotted online for around $1k USD.

InFocus IN26: http://www.infocus.com/Products/Projectors/IN26.aspx. MSRP = $999 USD, 1024x768 native. Seems to be new so I can't find a lot of data on it.

generally 800x600 should be ok - although if the budget permits go 1024. Anything higher than that is too much $$

1024X768 would be better and the Panasonic I recommended is less than $800.00

I have seen DLP projectors that don't look 1/4 as good as LCD.

the best DLPs will look better than the best LCDs BUT, at similar price points I am note sure which would win out - you would have to check them out in person.

LCD might be the way to go for displaying text only because you can move into the 1024 projectors for cheaper (at similar prices you might be looking at 800x600 DLP vs. 1024x768 LCD - in which case go LCD).

If the uses included DVD viewing, I'd go with the DLP - but its not...

Once again, try and find a dealer than will let you or your brother see the projector in person, and even get him to bring his laptop along with him to test it out. You might have to go to a more specialized store for them to let you do this, like a hi-fi boutique or something.

You may also want to look into the brightness of the room that it will be used in, as well as the screen that it is being projected onto (whether its white, grey, high gain (shiny), etc.)
