I've found the problem!!! The LAN port of the modem/router has to be a class c IP or it won't work. Linksys say this is because it is designed for 'small' businesses and home users

I have setup the router to PPPoA and ensure that it works. I have set the local IP to 192.168.1.21.

I connected it to the internet port of the WRT54G router and set that up to have a local IP of 192.168.1.22. When this happens I can ping, but no longer access the modem, though the router via http.

If I change my gateway IP to that of the router I can see the internet, but i seem to get burts of activity. I can't keep a constant connection. It seems to be related to the firewall on the router. If it is enabled then I drop the internet connection.
      This is driving me nuts!

I am strongly considering lobbing it all on ebay and replacing it with the all in one unit which I know will work.

As an alternative, I need to setup a small computer to house my RAID 5 array. Perhaps I could run smoothwall on that and jsut use the router as a wireless access point?
      Any thoughts?

        Hi Paddy

Just got back from Venice. Sorry to see all your problems are still going on.

Re Smoothwall, you can't do anything else on that box except Smoothwall.

I am really struggling to get it all working. You have the same router don't you?
Can you be explicit in telling me how you've set it up?

I was thinking of using this for smoothie, but i'd have to use the modem via usb.

I could then simply use the router as a WAP.

Re: the router, I have set it up for someone. I say set up, just did the very basics, enabled DHCP and WiFi. I used it with a cheapy modem I mentioned before. I've never had any complaints from him (apart from issues with BTs line quality but that's irrelevant).

As to smoothie, USB is possible in some circumstances. Drivers were available for the 'stingray' at the time I set it all up but it wasn't straight forward and I couldn't get it to work. Dunno if you could use your new modem with it.

If you can hold on a couple of weeks I may be able to lend you the modem that I have currently on the smoothie system (it is all being replaced by a Draytek 2800 http://www.draytek.co.uk/products/vigor2800.html) for troubleshooting.

The modem and router are fine. But i can't get them to work with NAT and port forwarding. Linksys have admitted that the router is 'crippled' for home use. I think i may have inadvertently stumbled across another limitation of the router.

I have placed a bid for a DG834PN on ebay. I'll recover the cost by selling these two
