Hmmm...might as well ask in this thread.

What do you think about those scanners in relation to price?
    - new Agfa Arcus 1200 for 130$
    - new Agfa DuoScan HiD for 150$

(for not that heavy use, but good quality would be very nice - photographs, boths negatives (B&W and colour) and prints (same thing), rather in good condition, and soem drawings...)

I have an Agfa Snapscan 1236s. IIRC, the Arcus was a slightly more expensive version (came with additional software or accessories, not sure).

If you go for an Agfa scanner, be sure to use the FotoLook software (their later software is terrible). Even if the scanner is not supported via FotoLook (directly), it suffice to install both softwares (drivers are shared ).

Agree with Damien. Digital ICE will save you a lot of time with regards to dust and scratch removal. The extra time it takes to scan is still far less than the time it would take to clean out the dust in every single picture in Photoshop. As far as color restoration, the automated functions are OK though as az said, you can probably do better by hand. At least it isn't as tedious as dust removal.

Whatever I happened to have laying around. She wasn't getting much use out of the SCSI scanjet (HP Scanjet 4, IIRC) so I sold that a while back, and she had been using a SlimScan from Microtek until it expired.

So she's not used to brilliance or anything, but she is heavily into scrapbooking now (and quite gifted at it, if some of the other stuff I've seen passed off as "professional" is anything to judge by).

For my part I just need to be able to make the occasional "photocopy" with it, pretty much any scanner will do that, and send off the occasional fax (via efax). Not big needs on my end.

Then i would recommend one of the Epson's that fits your price range. They seem to do a bit better out of the box on color balance and exposure.
