Sony may just be trying to avoid the huge order fulfillment problems Microsoft had at launch by artificially reducing the demand. I think that the high price tag is designed to offset the cost of all this tech they are bundling and allow them to gradually increase their installed base as they are able to reduce the price through lowering their costs.
They probably don't want to sell as many units as Microsoft did at launch, but will gradually catch up to Microsoft as they are able to manage their costs better. That way, they might actually lose less money in this phase of the next gen console wars.
Later, when they do drop the price, they'll be able to capitalize on the perceived value increase.
I predict that price drops will occur much more rapidly than last round.
