As a network admin I am pretty horrified by this thread. Basically your workstation and everything that goes on in your workstation is the property of your company. So they will get annoyed when they find out (depends how rigorously they check logs) what she's trying to do. Most people think it's a rather gestapo way of running a company but what else do you expect them to do?

Buy her a phone with plenty of free sms credits and use that. It's much safer.

We're slowly upgrading to Lotus 6.5, once we do we will be able to use the built in IM, or so we've been told.
You would, except that AIM now blocks sametime.

Ok here's the deal. Her corporate IT is FINE with instant messaging, BUT they can't poke holes in her firewall. They're FINE with her running but not installing Trillian, but they won't facilitate it.

As an IT Engineer (yeah, I'm employed now) and a Systems Administrator, I wouldn't ask these sorts of questions without having done due diligence.

The problem is that the "accepted solution" that corporate agreed on was to use AIM. This resulted in closing the MSN ports by corporate decree. Now AIM is blocking their sametime plugin, and IT is in a bind. They are working on getting corporate to re-authorize MSN but in the meantime people are just stuck and everyone is upset about it.

So, no need to be "horrified".

as for the topic at hand MSN has a hard problem running on 80, 8080 or 21. However, I know yahoo works on most of those as does aim I believe.

Hmm really? Yeah IIRC the "real" Yahoo client auto-drops to 80 or 8080 when it can't get to the server. I'll have to install that at home, suss out the server IP, and get it going with trillian. Bleh.

English doesn't borrow from other languages. It follows them down dark alleys, knocks them over, and goes through their pockets for loose grammar.

Well now that you've explained a bit more it's not sooo bad. But I have to admit from my point of view, my job is to make sure that the IT technology always provides the best support for people to do their jobs, and that people don't get the chance to mess up their technology, or their job workflow.

IM is a big no-no in my company, so that shapes my opinion on it. I'm pretty suprised that any large company would allow it since it's very hard to log, and everything really needs logged these days. If the police came to the front door and said that people were transferring child porn to a company's IP addresses through IM, then guess who gets in trouble?
