Decision-making software on NASA’s Earth Observing-1 spacecraft is wading through copious amounts of data to determine which information should be downloaded and studied first, saving researchers at Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., both time
Why, oh why, can't M$ software be this smart?

If you think MS stuff is dumb, our mail server didn't work this morning (yesterday was a holiday) because 3 of our users had auto-replies on, and were DDOSing (and being ddossed) by 3 other ppl with auto-replies on. Had 60,000 mails in the system from the weekend, and since they are stored in a text database (eww) we couldn't even start up the service.
Wasn't Deep Space 1 a bit "loud" in your place in regard to its autonomy? (autonav and remote agent, btw, found fun link: http://www.flownet.com/gat/jpl-lisp.html )
DS1 was indeed a good example of autonomy. It even suprised its designers by making adjustments in ways they hadn't specifically designed. Lots of potential there....
