What PSU spec?

I needed an uprated PC and asked our regular PC supplier for a quote.

Brief spec: D945GTP-L mobo, PentiumD 960 (3.6GHz), WD 320GB 7200RPM SATA HDD, 4*1GB DDR2/533 RAM, floppy, DVDRW, 7900GT 256MB DDR3.

Trouble is they specced the standard uATX tower and 270W PSU! Surely not enough?

It might start up... then again it might not. LOL!

Even high quality PSU's like Antec need to be beefy enough for modern applications. I killed my Antec 380W with all the crap I put it through.

Find out what the min amps required for that GPU. Whatever that number is times 12 = min watts required.

Can't tell you what that number is offhand since I'm on bb but a 350 should be enough for the video and everything else... Unless you plan on sli?

That CPU alone ~130W - its a real hog. The GPU I think is somewhere around 65W under load. So just right there you are almost at 200W.

Get something over 400W.

CPU + GPU + componets should equal ~250watts peak consumption. a 270w will give you a little room to spare, 300w would give you room for a few extra hardrives. 350w to 400w would be overkill unless you plan on overclocking.

What's interesting is I was expecting a raft of responses like Gurm and Mehen's, but wondered if the truth these days is closer to what llc said.

I went for 400W (which involved a larger case and extra cost) as a decision had to be made quickly.

Of course I realise quality is more important than quantity, along with having the amps available on the right rails.
