Yep, and there's a bit more to this, I think. Here on MURC people generally seem to know what software is good/nice/clean/fast and ways to keep their OS that way...but I think I noticed than whenever "typical"(tm) user notices slowness of his machine, it isn't blamed on crapware, but usually on slow CPU/etc.
Definatelly my computer feels more speedy in browsing/etc. usage than most computers of my neighbours (uni dorm)...even if on paper they are faster.

      Oo2 runs very nicely on a P-III

I'm not saying it's equivalent for power MSO users, but for the other 99.8% of us....

Y'know, I tried OO2 the other day (OO 2.0.4 final) and it was ... uh ... CRAP. Looks like Office 97, runs the way Office 2007 would on Office 97 caliber machines.

Takes LITERALLY a full minute to open any OO program, and there are severe lags while I type. If a word processor can't keep up with me, it's USELESS.

I've seen some tweaks floating around the net, maybe I'll try them. But right now OO runs like someone tried to make something that looks like Word 97 using director, and failed.

The user interface on my computer hasn't really changed much. I'm still using a mouse and keyboard

Gurm, I imagine you count the time it takes for OOo to concert large document from MS Office format to its own during opening? (I can't see any other explanation - on my trashy machine OOo starts in few seconds, and without the crap in the tray) That's not very fair comparison...
            And...lags?
Anyway, most users would be ahppy with it (heck, even with Abiword...will be fun when KOffice gets on Windows)

Open Office here opens very slightly slower than my MS2003 programs.
Guess you've got somethign wrong with your machine Gurm or did you try it on your 386

No, actually I just downloaded the default OO 2.0.4 final installer, let it install with the defaults, and double-click. It takes forever. But I'm told that if you disable Java, it runs much faster. I'm not sure why that shouldn't be the default... then again this is on a Centrino laptop. I'll try it on my home rig.
