    Hello!

I'm looking to purchase a new smartphone, as an upgrade to my Nokia 6260. Main reason to upgrade is threefold: 1. it cannot synchronize email outbox, 2. typing mails on it is cumbersome and has length limitations, 3. my usage/need has changed. I'm also not too pleased with the level of bugs on the Nokia, so I might be looking at other manufacturers.

First of all, you should now that my mobile phone is my only means of internet access (in my studio), through GPRS . So convenient sending of emails is high on my list (for which synchronizing the outbox of mailclients and/or a keyboard would be interesting). I'm also taking into account that there is a free pilot navigation software on Windows Mobile 5 (PocketFMS), which requires a 240x320 display and a Windows mobile device; I'd love to be able to run this. Finally, I also want it to have wifi (802.11b or g if possible).

I looked around, and found the BenQ-Siemens P51. However, I'm not sure if it will be available (the predecessor, P50, never was); nor what the implications of the closing of the German headoffice are for the European market/support.

Would you go for the P51, should it become available?

I have been looking at alternatives, but none offer everything in a single package. The formfactor of the HTC Wizard 2 and the HTC TyTN are interesting, but they lack gps. The HTC P3300 has GPS, but lacks a keyboard; as do some other devices (Mio, ...). There also are devices that seem to have everything, but only have a 240x240 display (Fujitsu-Siemens T830, HP/Ipaq 6915, ...).

I'm now wondering which is the best alternative: one without a keyboard, or one without a GPS. Both can be had externally via bluetooth, but given the fact that navigation is used for longer periods of time, I'm guessing it is best to have the gps built in (for autonomy reasons). Then again, the external keyboards can hardly be used without a table (unless I'm missing some handheld bluetooth keyboard), but would I need it that much when I can synch outboxes?

Any comments on the keyboard thing?
(are those small keyboards usable? are there convenient external keyboards?)

    Or on the GPS thing?
(there are SDIO gps receivers, but the devices I found have microSD slots)

    Thanks!

    Jörg

The HTC seems to be a nice form factor. I'm sure there will be 3rd party GPS units for it. I wnated the HTC Hermes, but they took too long so I ended up getting a Moto Q.
Ladies and gentlemen, take my advice, pull down your pants and slide on the ice.

I looked at it, but the display has the wrong orientation for the PocketFMS software (it should be 240 wide, 320 high). Dunno if you can rotate it on the Moto Q, but it might be odd to work with.

Plus, the Moto Q is not available for GSM markets yet...I'd get one with built-in keyboard and get pseudo-GPS through some European version of MapKing, it's been working wonderfully for me here in Thailand.

The GPS is for aviation use, so I'm looking at true GPS (and turn off the GSM section), like SirfStarIII.

Then I guess it depends how much writing you intend to do...I've been pretty happy with touchscreens and virtual keyboards so far, though I wouldn't want to write a Ph.D thesis on them, they're perfectly fine for SMS/e-mail and definitely beat a regular phone keypad.

Can you sync the outbox or the drafts folder?
I mean: type a mail on pc in Outlook, put it in outbox/drafts, synchronize with windows mobile, and have the mail on the pda ready to send?

If this is possible, the keyboard is less important.

I would advise against the Nokia N80. I'm on my third handset and seeking a replacement.
The wifi sure is a nice feature though.

The Nokia E61 got a good review in PC Pro. Seems to have everything you want except GPS.

Symbian is a good OS, but I need it to run Windows mobile to be able to use PocketFMS.

No problem, we all have days like that.

I'm now leaning towards the HTC TyTN in combination with a Haicom gps receiver.
