  • Updated MS Vista Licensing

MS has given in to enthusists and changed the wording of the Vista retail license agreement.

Previously, the EULA for Vista stated that a customer would be able to "reassign the [Windows Vista] license to another device one time." That language has now been changed to state “You may uninstall the software and install it on another device for your use. You may not do so to share this license between devices.”
I suppose this will ease fears for those of us who reinstall their OS frequently. Like me.

But at the same time it was announced today that the VLK versions of Vista will phone home monthly and require VLK management. BOOOOOOO!

Agreed on the BOOOOO. My question is with this... now lets say you own a 20 seat VLK and they get 21-23 phone homes in a month... do they turn them all off? Usually with VLK's they don't care if you are over license in a month or even a quarter because you buy a bigger chunk next cycle. We'll see how this changes....

Usually with VLK's they don't CHECK. I suppose that this has been coming for a while. MS has had seat management disabled in Server 2003 for a while now, and they've been threatening to turn it back on... companies with VLK's have been on the honor system (and kept in line by periodic SPA audits) for a few years.

What bothers me is their cavalier "let's go from one extreme to another" attitude. Windows XP Activation was a PR nightmare for them, but it has now faded (mostly) into the background. This will just reopen old wounds. *sigh*

I got a Licenced copy of Windows XP Media Edition 2005 off ebay (with the sticker and all that stuff to make it legal) a couple weeks ago. I installed it on my old PC, and went on with no problems. I got my new PC together last night, she didn't want to boot into Windows.

Ok not a big problem. I'll just reinstall (wanted to play around with making up a Slipstreamed XP with all my drivers and stuff on the new hardware)..I go put in Windows and get to where I put my product key in..then get, this Licence has been activated too many times, please contact Microsoft...

              WTF!

Anyways I call MS up and get it straigtned out pretty much painlessly, but I sure as hell hope I don't run into that again!

Have a link for this? I find it hard to believe.

Nevermind. Found it. We'll see if they hold to their guns on this one. I can't see large corporations standing for this crap.

Hey, you point me to a copy of Wall Street Office, Farin Foresight, or Solomon for BSD, and I'll happily present it as an option to the finance company we support.

You can go on and on about how there's software for your favorite blend of *nix, and on the workstation it's starting to be true. But start to do something specialized with your servers, and forget it.

That's still a far cry from "NO SOFTWARE". True, a large majority of custom, industry specific software is still made solely for Windows, but with virtualization software now being rather prevalent that argument is harder to use as a sole basis for choosing one platform over another.

An operating system is a tool and as such you choose the one that fits the situation best. If that's Windows for one client and Linux for another, then so be it. It's irresponsible and ignorant to insist on one platform or another simply because.

My mother-in-law and wife are opening a real-estate office. For the most part we are purchasing Windows-based systems because most of the software in that industry is Windows-based. I and my wife would prefer OS X, but that choice would not be appropriate at this time. That is until I write versions of the software they use to be platform independent.

I remember reading that VLK users will have to run, in effect a licencing server dedicated to Vista verification, rather than have PCs try to access the inet just to phone home.....

i'll have to find that again

It's described in the article I linked to.

Wow, I've been reading some more about "Vista Volume Activation 2.0". It's horrible. Our desktop deployment guys are going to freak when they see this. That's a pretty major infrastructure we have to get set up for them to make it work. I think we'll see a lot of large companies abort their Vista plans because of this.
