  • I'm going to slit my wrists

Ok. you may or may not recall, but I've had quite a number of issues with my "new" computer.

I ended up thinking that the reboots and lockups that were occurring were due to my motherboard. So I changed my a8r-mvp to an an an8-sli premium.

Ever since then (over the summer), I didn't have any issues.

Then, last night, (while not doing anything taxing), I got 3 BSODs, and when I returned to my PC tonight (which I haven't used from last night), the screen wouldn't power back on (I have the monitor power off after an hour or so).

I tried updating the BIOS with Asusupdate, but it doesn't ever finish updating, so I'll give it a whirl with a boot disk.

Other than that, does anyone have any idea why my computer sucks at life?

    Specs:

    Opteron 165 @ stock specs
    2GB of Corsair
    an8-sli premium
    NEC 3550a
    Hauppage PVR 250
    Radeon x700
WD SATA Raptor drive (70 GB)

And it just rebooted again, minutes after my first post. At the time, I was using my WinPVR software to record a 2 minute clip off of TV. Maybe this is HDD related.

I'd run a memory test on it first, if that passes then run a HD test.

Then check/swap your PSU and inspect the mobo for bad caps.

I love ASUS mobos for the features and stability, but in the past year I've had a high proportion of the ones I've used die on me.

Sounds like you zapped the RAM and the ESD damage is starting to kick in from the summer.

it could also be PSU or mobo. basicly what everyone else said

Try swapping all components out (or just removing them if not absolutely required) if you have spares - I've even had a dodgy optical drive screw with a variety of different, otherwise stable, machines. Usual suspects are mobo, memory and PSU though.

friend of mine had similiar problems, random lockups all the time .. tried everything, swapped memory modules, bought new psu ... in the end it was the processor. He underclocked it and never had any problems again.

Might be worth a try ....

sounds like zapped ram or if its an nv chipset you zappend the nth bridge by not reading the manual regarding installing ram.

i would be increadably surprised if the opty at stock speed was faulty.

do try swapping the psu if you can.

I ran the Windows memory test off of the Ultimate Boot CD last night. It ended up failing something on the 6th pass. I'll have to give it another try tonight to make sure it wasn't a fluke.

This memory wasn't cheap either. Argh.

Will do, although my voltages seem well within spec (for the PSU).

The mobo is only a few months old, so HOPEFULLY it's alright.

Well, it is an NV chipset, but if I zapped the northbridge from not RTFM (which I recall doing), why would it have taken this long to show issue?

If it passes tonight all you will know is that it can work every other day.

Sorry, I use that expression all the time. Guess you'd have no way of knowing that. This machine is just frustrating the hell out of me. Actually, all machines are just failing on me lately.

Friday I blew 3rd gear in my car (for the 2nd time). They're the weakest gears in our trannies, so those of us who have much more power than stock tend to shatter them on an annual basis.

My cell phone (treo 650) doesn't like to charge itself. When I plug it in, it will rapidly LOSE any charge it had, and on occasion, it will slowly gain a charge. However, as wacky as this is, the thing is leaps and bounds more stable than my Treo 600 was.

And finally, I hate my router

So basically the four or so most important devices in my life are all failing on me to some degree on a daily basis. It's enough to drive a fella crazy.
