You mean Merced is supposed to come out next year. They still haven't even printed the Alpha silicon yet (okay, they are doing it ight now mind you, but it's still not done). Plus this is Intel's first 64-bit CPU, so it may take quite a bit of time to tweak it. On top of all that to run it at true 64-bit capabilities you will need Microsoft's 64-bit version of Win2K...which means that they would have to release it on time. And we all know how long it take Microsoft to make an OS.

Well I ain't getting one till I've seen one fly infront of my own eyes. Even then if it's bloody amazing, I'll probably go with the Merced, because, well it's Intel. Sorry, but I've been burned too much with Super Shitty Seven mobos.
Only once I've used a couple and seen them be reliable, work with loads of hardware, and be really cool then I will buy one.

I would have no reservations about buying a new K7 chip. My K6-2 300 MHz system runs perfectly with every piece of hardware I've thrown at it. Every PCI slot on my comp is full, and I get decent framerates in virtually every game.

The reviews I've read so far say that there have been no difficulties installing all sorts of hardware on the AMD motherboard.

As for Merced, I bet we'll see Linux running faster/better/sooner on it than any MS product. From what I know about Merced NT, it can only run in 64 bit mode when there are no 32-bit programs around. And one old copy of Word will be enough to force the entire system into the significantly slower "32-bit compatible" mode.
Now, if the programs were open-source, that wouldn't really be an issue

By the looks of this article www.aceshardware.com/articles/x86/K7/K7intro.shtml Intel definitely has a fight on their hands. In some cases the Athlon is wiping the floor with Intel. Wonder if they will be able to respond in time?

As for the SS7, it all depended on whether you purchased quality or not. I have two EPoX SS7 boards one with the AMD K6-2/300, G200 16MB AGP and the other with the AMD K6-2/400, G400 32MB DH AGP, and I've had no real problems at all.

Intel is going to be sweating it out for about one and a half years. Merced isn't suppose to even be as fast as the Athlon when it finally ships. AMD hasn't been faster than intel since the 486 days. I hope that AMD uses there time wisely. I am glad that intel has compeditors like AMD, it keeps them on there toes. Intel has been throwing us left over bread crumbs for a while now. It is good to see them push for power, cause that means that in the long run, we will have better and faster products.
