Scenario; A64 rig shut down and won't turn on.

All lights flash as normal, drives start, fan starts for 2-3 seconds then the rig 'burps' with what sounds like a bearing rattle. System shuts down & won't try again unless the power center is cycled off/on for ~1 minute. Meanwhile the power light flashes once every few seconds.

Bad fan or P/S? P/S is a 600 watter. Overkill for that rig.

I'm betting fan & the CPU safety system is kicking in.

Screws are tight. Grounding good too, plus that room has it's own redundent ground cable because of the 'puters.

I'd think P/S.
I don't care what it's rated at, they are all cr*p now-a-days .
I had one that was barely 3 months old.
everything would spin up and it seemed like it wanted to start, then it would poop out.
I disconnected a few periperals and it would start fine.
A new p/s fixed it.

In my experience, an AMD system where the fan spins up very briefly, there's no boot attempt, and the whole system shuts down power, is a bad/loose CPU.

The noise would make me think it's got something to do with fans, but it shouldn't be shutting off then. Disconnect any fan monitoring to be sure. But even if ne of the fans has bitten the dust, that doesn't necessarily mean that's the only thing wrong with the system.

I've had a bad PS act like that before, so that would be my first guess. Try another if you've got one around. If not, the Antec Smartpower series are really good.

I agree that it's either a fan problem or a PS problem.

Power supply. And about Antecs, had two smartpower go down in less than three months.

It's gotta be the fan.

On try #30 it booted with a very noisy fan, which quieted after 2 minutes & it stayed up. Sensor shows RPM's inconsistant, so it sounds like the fan bearing being iffy.

Off I go tomorrow for a new one.

A couple years back I would have sworn by Antec, but not any more.

I'm still - STILL - using an Enlight 450W in my main rig. It's probably 4 years old now and still humming quietly and providing rock-stable power. I'm pretty sure Julie's machine has an Enlight 350W...

Anyway Doc, it sounds like your mobo has fan monitoring and a long memory hold time. Replace that fan, and then run it with some hardware monitoring for a good long burn-in afterwards to make sure nothing else has gone out.
