CeleronA @ 450 vs. Pentium II 450 vs. Pentium III 450

I have a Celeron 300A @ 450MHz right now, and am thinking about moving to a pentium III 450MHz. I was just wondering what the difference in performance (and using what kind of applications) would a Pentium III 450 MHz really benefit over a PII450, or my current processor. I mean, at the exact same clock speed, is the PIII450 significantly faster?

Can't say for certain Larry. I've never run my PIII-450 below 581Mhz. (Alright for about 30 seconds til I could get into SoftMenu II).

I now run mine @ 600Mhz and get 9500 in the CPU benchmark of 3DMark99 Max...

The P3 is generally more overclockable than the P2, and they are both the same price. As far as comparing it to the celeron you are using, it is not really a comparison, since you can overclock the P3 to a higher level than your celeron. But if you are running anything that is SSE enhanced, then there is quite a bit of difference.

So what applications (or games) are SSE enabled? How about things that are not? For example: Quake 2 with PIII450 vs. Quake 2 with Celeron @ 450?

If I get a PIII, I don't plan on overclocking it. I was really hoping for a clock to clock comparison, but I guess I won't get any 'cause everybody runs their PIII450 at 500+MHZ!

There is no point upgrading from a celery 450 to a Pentium3 450, especially right now. Your $60 chip will run most games just as fast as the P3. Even if you plan on pushing it to 558 or higher the price performance curve really isn't worth it. A better bet would be to wait and see what transpires between Intel and AMD over the next couple of months and take advantage of the price war this is likely to generate. The next genration celerons look to be screamers. Probably starting at 500mhz and then going up to 650. They come equipped with SSE and full speed cache on a 100mhz bus!

I was wondering that why are they called Celerons? I mean that how do those next gen Cellys differ from P3?

Hi Buuri,

a.f.a.i.k. the upcoming Celerons will also have SSE,
but their L2 cache is at full core speed and 128KB in size, P3s have 512KB L2 cache at half core speed.

I think the next gen Celeries are meant to make AMD a really hard live with their quite expensive K7 ...

But the new PIIIs being introduced in september for the Camino (i820) chipset will also run with full speed on-dye cache. In fact, these new ones (Coppermine) will introduce 256kb of full speed cache. I'm expecting a huge increase in speed....

Larry is correct, Maggi. The upcoming P3's will be very similar to the mobile P3's in how the cache is operated, on die full speed.

Burri, the way I understand it, the main difference between the upcoming P3's and the new Celerons is the packaging and cache size. Unless I'm mistaken, the differences are as follows:

P3:
(1) 256KB integrated full core speed L2 cache
(2) Slot 1 packaging
(3) 100MHz and 133MHz FSB
(4) i820 chipset support

New Celerons:
(1) 128KB integrated full core speed L2 cache
(2) Socket 370 packaging
(3) 100MHz FSB
(4) chipset ???

THey both have SSE support, but the big concern with the new celerons is the motherboards that you will be forced to use. With socket 370 based products there is no clear upgrade path to anything else other than another celeron unless you use a slocket contraption, which we all know introduces noise into the picture and limits your OC'ing ability. I'm not sure what I'm going to do for my next upgrade. Like I said, some of that info might be wrong, that's just what I've gathered from various places...

PII450 : 3615
PIII450 : 4297
PIII560 (o'cl): 5244

I have a Celeron 366 @ 550 and it out performs a PIII 550 except for anything requiring SECC2 (obviously). But, benchmarks are almost subjective in that depending on how much software is running, background bit depth, etc. etc.

Keep your 450 for now and wait a wee bit. The only reason I have a 366 is because I physically ****ed up my 300A fiddlin' with it. Right now, I have my eye on the Celeron 500a being o/c to 750. Which is possible with a buttload of cooling. I am going to wait though and see what the Athlon and Intel action begats the industry.

Oh, and, I doubt that a well made slotket device will introduce any more noise in the system.
