Figures from a number of sources lend some credit to this, though it's too early in the life of the Wii and PS3 (even the 360 for that matter) to get any sense of which will take the lead in the long-term. Obviously.
Stock definitely had a lot to do with this, as Nintendo couldn't ship enough Wii's out to meet demand and Sony didn't have enough stock to begin with. Microsoft, on the other hand, had enough surplus stock to easily meet demands.
Shoppers looking for one of the new entries didn't want to leave empty-handed and the Xbox was an attractive alternative.
Dan and I have talked about this and we pretty much agree that there's not going to be a competition for sales between all three players, but rather between Microsoft and Sony. That's not discounting the Wii - the choice will be, "I want a Wii and which other system?"“And, remember: there's no 'I' in 'irony'†~ Merlin Mann
