The router is in the cellar, there's a reason it's wireless

I am at the edge of the WLAN's range here, which is OK for surfing, but not optimal for streaming music or doing realtime stuff (the user interface in the Squeezebox is controlled from the server; the SB just routes the IR codes to the server and then displays what the server tells it to).

How would I go about bridging the NICs? I have never done this before. Would bridging let me connect using both cards?

right click My Network Places > Properties > right click connection > bridge connections

do you intend to access the sb from elsewhere in the house?

No. Also, it's the other way around - the SB must access the server, which is on my computer (it's a notebook, but when I'm home and listening to music, it's docked).

OK, when I bridge them, I can't get a connection to either the SB or the router...

sorry, was somewhere else for a bit

could you post your new ipconfig /all after bridging?

I think I see your problem...

The Interface which connects to the Internet should be the only one with a Default Gateway.

Thus, your Wireless NIC should have a Default Gateway, and your Wired NIC should not.

Simply removing the Default Gateway from the wired connection should fix your problem. You could then re-enable DHCP on your wireless interface and it would work, since your Router will assign a Default Gateway as soon the DHCP request is fulfilled.

Set the Metric of your wired interface to 5, Set the Metric to your wireless interface to 10; this will force the wired NIC to try and resolve your gateway-less network first. Make sure your Binding Order matches your metrics: Wired first, followed by Wireless.

If you wish to talk to the squeezebox by name, add an entry into your C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file which looks like this:

Example; if your squeezebox has an IP Address of 192.168.1.199:

                  127.0.0.1 Localhost
                  192.168.1.199 Squeezebox

The hosts file is a regular ASCII text file which does not have a file suffix. Edit it in your favorite text editor.

Thanks, this sounds promising. I'll try tomorrow or so, because I have two exams tomorrow, and I don't want to bother my mind with computer stuff now.

Thank you I'll report back on how this worked on the weekend.

Thank you, MMM, it worked perfectly! I thought it should have been this easy from the start, but apparently tried too much at once...

Also thank you llc for your patience and resourcefulness!
