  • stream media to a playstation 2

    Hello,

Simple question: a friend of mine has a PS2 with network connection. Is it possible to connect it in network with a PC and stream media (movies, photos, music) from the PC to the PS2?

    If so, what is needed?

There are a couple software packages for the PS2 that will allow this. You would need one of those packages.

Yes... Any names of such packages? A search on Google on the keywords "stream, media, Playstation" doesn't yield nice results. I only found QTV by BroadQ, but that doesn't appear to be a finished product. Orb doesn't seem to work for PS2.

QTV sounds about right. Maybe there was another version... QMedia? I dunno. You ought to ask in the FileForums for PS2.

          Found something:

edit: won't work: his PS2 is a newer slimline mod without mod-chip...

stream media to a playstation 2

I've also been researching this, with little luck:
            - The BroadQ application was later re-branded as the GameShark Media Player, which was once available at madcatz.com.
            - That product is no longer available, however there's something called GameShark2 Game Codes with Media Player. I suspect this is a different product, which is only capable of playing media from a burned CD or DVD (which is how the ActionReplay MAX Media Player works). I can't find any useful information on the GameShark2 product.
            - I haven't found either of these media players on eBay.
            - In Europe, there is a product by trendEXpress, called Medio - Digital Media Player for PlayStation 2. The trendEXpress website offers the product directly and lists two other locations to buy. Unfortunately the trendEXpress website doesn't indicate whether the item is in stock (I didn't want to place an order and risk it), and they don't respond to my emails. The two other locations are German websites; I can't find the product and email's not working too great so far.
            - If you could buy Medio, it still might not work on a North American NTSC playstation.

            - I guess Sony wants you to buy a separate wireless Media Adapter box for $200+. I've still seen a lot of bad reviews on the various product offerings.

            - Finally, I believe there's a way (SwapMagic?) to run homebrew applications (namely the SMS media player you mentioned) only by swapping out disks, instead of using a mod chip. I consider this too much trouble though.

If you get anything working, please post!

              One more option:

Swap Magic 3.6 is supposedly able to run programs from a USB drive attached to the Playstation. The Reality Media player could be placed on a small and inexpensive thumb drive, and then run without needing to buy a swap lid, or a swipe card, or swap disks at all.

I'm planning to try this eventually. I'll repost when I have news.

              Cheers,

The thumbdrive support for the PS2 is pretty sketchy, you usually have to repartition/reformat the thumb drive and even then... not sure if it'll work. There's a ton of discussion about this stuff at AfterDawn.

On another topic, I just bought a new DVD player as an interim device until I get a bigger TV. It's an RCA, it plays DIVX/XVID (latest stuff downloaded via Torrent works fine), WMV, MPG, MP3, etc.

                It was $40.

                Might want to consider that.

Well, I was considering to get some software like this for a friend of mine (who is interested in doing it). He has a divx dvd player, but it would be very useful for him to stream music and video via a network.

Apparently, there is no easy way...
(guess I'll have to find him something else)

                  Thanks!

Oh, and welcome to the forums, michaelsonbritt !
