    Vista's long goodbye

Windows Vista suffers from a bug that causes many machines to stall while deleting, copying and moving files, a flaw that has provoked consternation in online forums.

"I've seen this bug in action, and trust me, it's as if you're copying over a 64k link using only 256mb of RAM," one Reg reader complained. "To add to the problem, you can't cancel or anything."

According to a thread on Microsoft's TechNet site, Microsoft has issued a hotfix for the problem, but it has failed to quell the outrage. For one thing, individual users must get Microsoft's approval before the fix can be downloaded, according to our tipster. And for another, hotfixes are more of a pain to install than patches.

We've contacted a Microsoft spokeswoman, who promised to see if a patch for the problem in the works. Meanwhile, Vista users continue to grumble.

"I simply can not believe that I updated to a new computer and put windows Vista on it to find that it's not even capable of moving and deleting files in an efficient manner," one disaffected user posted in the Microsoft forum. "Microsoft must be kidding! The most basic of features that I use all the time is a slow train wreck."

I haven't seen this problem but Vista locks up on me randomly. I blame my motherboard though. By far the most unstable motherboard I've ever had.

I haven't seen this problem either, in fact so far my Vista setup has been as stable as my XP setup.

The only problem I've had so far has been with my Fortissimo II, no drivers but that is hardly an issue with Vista.

i just built a brand new machine with a new install of vista ultimate...for the most part i did not use the install disk that came with the hardware, but rather i downloaded the latest drivers from the vendors website...i put them in a temp folder on the C drive...install from there and then delete them(..with the shift key). then i would do the next driver.

        i didn't notice any problems

It happens to me sometimes when moving large files. Vista just generally feels sluggish. I generally find file management a bit of a pain cf XP.

I've been trying to grab the patch on Premier support all morning, but the download server has crashed from the load.

Now if Vista can only fix the piss poor networking.

It had several filesystem bugs that could under some circumstances reproduce any kind of weird slowdowns

There is polish communicator software "Gadu-Gadu". In some cases, it can terribly destroyd Your Vista after starting it (it always run fine on Win9x/2K/XP). The icons disappear, menu start freeze & disappear too Some errors can show.

Some of my clients install Nero 7... It worked fine, but they wan't back to 6.
But well. After starting to unninstall app, it freeze system & close. After that Vista get some errors & restart the shell. What can i say. The "wow" effect is really WOW

I've seen this happen to me with the RTM and now 64 bit Ultimate...thought it was weird..

Otherwise I've been impressed with Vista, but not the drivers I've gotten so far for my Sound card and Video card, but they'll sort themselves out. HP is totally lacking drivers for my laser printer and I can't use it since I ahve it set up on my server.

I have the x86 and x64 version of the patch (international). If anyone wants it and can't get it, fire me a PM.

There are a couple sites that have ALL (or most of) the Microsoft "call us to get this and pay $59 which we might refund if you really needed it" hotfixes. Can I link 'em here?

As long as they are legit sites without pr0n or malware on them.
