• K6-2 shuts down!

I have a AMD system wich i have just bought
    a G400 16MB SingleD.

When it starts to read the drivers when i boot (Win98 SE) It just shuts the entire system down (ATX)
When i then start it again in safe mode it
says that my card-type is wrong!

Is it my G400 that is ****ed up??
I can only run windows in VGA 16 color mode

    HELP HELP!

Do you have 1007 BIOS from ftp.asuscom.de? (Don't use 1008 Beta1!) Do you have ALI AGP driver 1.60 from www.ali.com.tw installed?

You have a Windows Protection error, I think (on, goody!)... lots of stuff to try for one of those...!

If you haven't, try hitting 'esc' at the splash screens, so you can maybe see specifically what's not loading right. The Windows splash screen loads like 3x, so keep at it... but you'll probably wind up staring at some screen that concludes, "System Halted".
Get the latest BIOS for your mobo, naturally, but even more important, get to ALI and get the latest AGP drivers. Sounds to me like this might be your problem... so install those, but don't expect your problem to be solved, yet (though it may be)... we still have to fix Windows...
make sure you do/don't need the MS patch for the K6-2 350 and above when running Win98. I don't think you do, but let's just cover all bases.
Boot into safe mode... better yet, boot into safe mode from a boot floppy. Get into Device Manager in Safe Mode.. this seems to be the master list of all HW ever installed on your system. You won't be able to get conflict info here, but are there any weird devices? Duplicate (or more) devices? Delete them.
While there, set your video card to VGA.
My premise is that you have a botched Windows install, so I'd say reboot to DOS (preferably from that boot floppy, but at least hit F8 to get the Boot Menu and choose 'Command Prompt Only"-- don't install from within Windows itself!!) and reinstall Win98SE.
I think that ought to do it... but let us know what happens, or any more details you get about the specific error msgs or problems you find. Good luck.

Oh and also, head to http://www.mcs.net/~revolutn/win98_vxd_fix.htm and fix the install problems of Win98... it does not install certain essential .vxd (virtual device driver) files (including ones for communication and video)... more info is on the site, as well as a batch file to fix it... done it several times on several machines, no danger and it's nice to see those parentheses disappear from the "driver details" tab of various devices

Make sure that no card is inserted in pci slot next to agp slot.
They share resources and can cause the problems you've described

            1) Edit msdos.sys and add 'logo=0' below last line that contains an '='. That will prevent splash screen on boot-up. (You will have to remove hidden/system attributes 1st)
            2) Choose create log file at startup(press F8) and read bootlog.txt. You might find w98 stops loading at same point each time. Search listing for 'fail' and you'll see all that isn't right

Paul's right about the bootlog. You can also run the step-by-step, and see if you can find out where the lock is.
Also, how good is your power supply? It might be the cause of the problem. If the G400 pulled a lot of current, there might be a voltage drop on the processor, causing a shutdown or reboot. I might try increasing the CPU core voltage a little. I run my K6-2/350 at 400Mhz, with the voltage at 2.4V. However, it's worth mentioning that although I thought my system was pretty stable with 350Mhz@2.2V, a lot of lock-ups went away when I started running 350@2.3V.

              Good luck,
