Bus mastering for Idiots wanted.

With all the busmastering talk and etc, how is it implemented on a PCI/AGP bus PC?

Can you have more than one Bus master on a bus is the AGP and PCI the same bus, etc.

Or is there a great but simple web page to explain this.

It's rather old, and doesn't specifically mention the PCI or AGP bus, but the basic concepts still apply.

Bus mastering is the ability of an expansion (ISA/EISA/VLB/MCA/etc)
card to directly read and write to main memory. This allows the CPU
do delegate I/O work out to the cards, freeing it to do other things.


You can have multiple bus mastering cards in your computer, but some motherboards have one PCI slot that doesn't support bus mastering.
If you put a bus master capable card in that slot it almost always will still work, just not to its full potential.

There must be a good website out there with better info, anyone else want to jump in on this?

well im sure there are lots of schools out there that will teach you how to master a bus (school buses, city transit buses, oh and you can go to england and learn to master those dubble decker jobers ! fun....
