  • Overclocking / Benchmarking questions

Just a few small questions: I now have my P2 350 overclocked to 392 (thanks to all who responded to my earlier post on this; especially the dude who told me to try 112). I realize this ain't much increase, but it's an increase nonetheless. Now since my FSB is 112, that means my PCI bus is running at 37.33mhz, which means AGP is at 74.66mhz. Is my G400 gonna heat up more because of this? Also, you guys that are benching with 3dmark 99: exactly how are you benching? Did you run the 5-times-in-a-row test with no sound?

You shouldn't incure any problems at that speed, well with possible exception that you might need to set for AGP1x. If this is the case (check AGP mode by using PCIlist) don't worry it will only slow down the texture rendering speed for the size that is larger than the onboard mem on your Gcard. As for benchmarking with 3DMark 99 Max... sometimes I run it once and other times (for better accuracy) I'll run 3 times back to back... You cannot disable sound in 3Dmark as it doesn't run the sound when running the tests, only when in demo mode does it do the sound. Hope this helps...

Oh and use the PD5.x reg hack in the "download" section of the MURC to disable Vsync and/or to set/force AGP modes.

      Greebe:

I've been using G400 tweak to double check my AGP modes by running that 3dmark benchmark with "force AGP" on and off. I must be running 2x without problems cause there's no difference in scores. SANDRA says my AGP is fine too, so I think I'm ok. Thanks for the response though. Now if only I could figure out why the latest manual revision for my Asus P2B board says it has 4 jumpers for FSB speed and I only have 3...queer.

P.S. Ack!! Wouldn't you know it; just when I say I'm fine, my machine crashes. Already locked up 3 times tonight. That's 3 times more than its locked up in the past 6 months. Guess I'm back down to 350.

Rock, if you have the origonal heatsink fan on it that might be the prob. Though the Deschutes(sp?) core does run much cooler at 2.0v than the Klamath at 2.8v, all you might need is a more efficient method of removing heat from the core. Remember, your core is the same as the 400 core, just slower cache (1/2ns less than 400 cache chips + the 400 heatsink actually has protrusions that touch the cache chips) and the cpu multiplier lock is set 1 bin higher.
I am confident that you will attain 392 stable with a little more cooling. Or simply more ventillation of the cache chips by removing the case.
Though it's not everyones cup of tea to dismantle the case and install a homemade mockup heatsink to remove heat.
Besides if your Celeron gets 450 no prob then you have very little incentive to bastardise the 350.

Well, I took the truly "nerdy way out". When you have a problem, just throw money at it until the problem goes away: I bought a P3 450.

Rock - I have been playing w/3dmark for about a week now. When I got highest scores (non-oc'd), I upped my k63-450 to 500. Only thing that increased was cpu-3d marks (6322 to 6740). Is that the case w/your pc?

                Paul:

I haven't tried overclocking my new P3 450 yet. I'm getting 7,025 CPU 3Dmarks now. I'm very happy with the speed, and I'm not sacrificing the stability of my system by upping the FSB. I like my system as it is, "Rock" solid.

                  JC:

No can do. If I bump my FSP up to 124, that means my PCI bus will run at 42mhz, and thats crazy. With my particular mobo, there's no jumper settings for 124 FSB with a tolerable PCI speed. Too bad too; there's a revision of my board that lets you set the FSB to 124 and the PCI to 31. But that aint mine.
