Ah OK. So you want something like the browser on the iPhone, I guess.

Oh, I think what will really put me off the iPhone are fingerprints on display and backside. It won't look pretty for long and I can't stand fingerprints on my display.
There's an Opera in my macbook.

Won't happen until WM makers start using higher resolution displays. The current 320x240 display is simply too small. Now when the 640x480 and 800x600 start coming out on WM devices, which they will simply because they will feel the need to compete with the iPhones' 320x480 display, then you will start having enough real estate to do so.

Though of the WM browsers, Opera does do the best job. And Opera has recently announced Opera 9 Mobile with zoom (ala iPhone?), AJAX/Web 2.0, and Widget functionality:

There's no use on a phone for many of the features and services that are available to someone using Mac OS X. However, there are still a number of core OS X technologies that are still likely used in the version powering the iPhone.

If you've noticed in any of Apple's marketing or whatnot they specifically use the term "OS X" opposed to the "Mac OS X" used elsewhere for almost anything to do with OS X as we traditionally know it.

Simply put again, it's Mac OS X without all the 'parts' needed for a desktop OS. It's still the OS X core, technologies, and any extras applicable to a smart phone platform.
Before I get into this - I believe we both agree one what kind of platform the iPhone is running on. I get what you're saying and noticed what you point out waaayyy back when they first announced the iPhone, but I still gotta call bullshit on this.

Apple's marketing department is very good at semi-deceptive marketing. They understand damn well that the average consumer does not see a difference between OS X and Mac OS X. And they also understand that quite a few Mac users do not understand the difference. Hell, there are quite a few software developers (even more on the Mac than on Windows) that are not technically orientated and do not understand that difference.

Apple did that because they wanted to avoid the stigma of an embedded OS. They didn't want people to think of it as a stripped down version of Mac OS X, or think it was limited in any way. The fact Steve Jobs has been running around calling "OS X" 5 years more advanced than any other platform right now proves that.

Unfortunately, "OS X" still is a stripped down embedded platform. There are quite a few core technologies that are *not* going to make it in, and the ones that do will have either have features cut or will work in completely different ways. This is the nature of an embedded platform, where hardware constraints determine just how flexbile your platform is.

I'm willing to bet that they are going to time developer suppport for the iPhone to coincide with 10.5 - that way they can conveniently introduce new frameworks that hide those facts.

Something else I gotta throw out there... I guess recent ads have shown a number of changes in the iPhone as compared to when it was first demonstrated...

          clicky link.

personally, i think the biggest change is that the color contrast actually appears to be normal, and as such it shows what the device is likely to actually look at...

Why hasn't anyone sued Apple yet? I mean, whether or not I like Macs aside, they outright LIE in all their ad campaigns, they have for years. Why has this never resulted in a lawsuit?

Yep, I did it, I bought an iPhone. My Motorola Q was starting to reset once a day and also hanging when answering every 10th call or so.

While I used it for the last few days, I thought of this post above that Gurm made back on June 5th. I actually thought the same thing. Thought there was no way the phone could be as cool as the ads...

            My mini review:

            First the bad.
            1. My Motorola Q would make a confirm noise when my bluetooth headset would turn on. That was great because my phone would be tucked away in my pocket or visor and I wouldn't have to take it out. I miss that feature
            2. Can't send pictures or video via MMS that 99% of the rest of the world can do with their phone.
            3. No flash support in the Safari browser
            4. Edge can be slow *I have more to say about this later*
            5. Web apps aren't that great. Looking forward to the SDK coming out.
            6. The camera sucks in low light, but I didn't expect much from a camera phone. Bright light pictures are actually decent for what it is.
            7. No 64-bit drivers support, so I can't use the iTunes on my home PC.(This was a shocker when I first plugged it in and it told me that it wouldn't work)
            8. Proprietary headphone jack
            9. No copy and paste
            10. Can't "subscribe" to Google Calendar via ICS, though you can subscribe in Outlook 2007, Vista Calendar, and the MAC calendar and then sync to those calendars to the iPhone calendar
OK, so now the good stuff:

Everything else! Seriously, this phone is 5-10 years ahead of the competition. Everything is simple, intuitive, aesthetically beautiful(software and hardware), and the phone feels rock solid in your hand.

The phone is actually smaller than my Q in width, height, and length but feels like I have a lot more room to work with due to the large screen.

The touch screen is awesome! It works so well and in my opinion, is perfect.

The web browser is a pure joy to use. I don't think I could ever use a cryptic phone browser ever again. Double clicking a table enlarges it to the width of the screen and the pinching and expanding with two fingers just makes life so easy. I think this is the single best part of the phone. This is the "killer" app that makes it stand worlds apart from anything else.

SMS is great since it shows things in a conversation.

Calendar is phenomenal. It's the little things that count like when you click on "today" and it slowly scrolls to the current time and stops, so you don't have to look at anything previous unless you want to. Or how you can click on "list" and give the screen a flick to fast forward to march 2008 if you want.

Photos are cool, 5 transitions to go along with the picture slideshow. Of course you can turn the phone widescreen or even upside down if you wish, the picture will correct itself.

Camera is ok, nothing special, no zoom, no manual controls, poor low light. Decent bright light pictures. No video though

Youtube feature is fun. It's setup to work with the iPhone, so it makes it simple. Video can only be viewed in widescreen. At the bottom, there are icons for "Featured", "Most Viewed", "Bookmarks", "Search", "More" which leads to "Most Recent", "Top Rated", and "History".

Maps is really cool. First of all, real time traffic. You can view a "Satellite" view or "Map" view. You can search for antyhing. For example, I searched for "bofa gilroy". I wnated to see if it would show me all fo the Bank of Americas in Gilroy and surrounding areas. Sure as shit, it did! It puts little pins on the screen as to their location. I select one as the "destination", then click in the "Start" box. I type in my address and 30 seconds later I have directions. Very well thought out for the iPhone interface.

The Phone part works really well. The touch screen works so good that dialing is easy. Visual voicemail is a nice and welcome feature. The contacs section is setup really well and has the alphabet on the right hand side of the screen is small letters on a translucent background, so you can easily scroll to any letter you want. Or, if you prefer, just scroll through the list. With the ability to be able to flick the screen, scrolling is easier than holding down a button and faster. Once again, tons of attention to the little things that make this phone great.

There is much more, but I am tired of typing. Just ask if you have any questions.

OK, as you can see, I am sold. This phone is the best. Sure, the HTC Titan might have every feature known to man, bt if you read around the web, it crashes, counter-intuitive, and it's ugly.

Bottom line, those commercials that show this phone are exactly how the phone works and actually in some places, the phone has exceeded what I have seen.

I wasn't even going to buy it, but I walked into an apple store and played with it for 30 minutes. Bad idea. I bought it the next day.
